  • How much is a cup?

For those of us in the UK, can anyone tell me please what a "cup" of veggies looks like. I thought it was about a handful but I'd like to be exact.

    Thanks,

Hi. I know you all in the UK do this differently than us here.

A "cup" is 8 fluid ounces or 240 ml. It's a volume measurement. It doesn't convert to a weight measure. That is 8 fluid ounces of radishes is not equal to 8 ounces of radishes.

I've seen different folks deal with this cup issues 2 different ways:

    1. Weigh the food and use the USDA Nutrient Database to get the grams equivalent of the cup measure

When you look at the USDA site you'll see that each food has it's own gram weight for the cup measure. For example 1 cup of raw spinach weighs 30 grams. But 1 cup of raw celery weighs 101 grams.

    2. Cut a plastic 1 liter bottle into a quarters and use the bottom quarter as the "cup" measure.

    I hope that helps you.

I use a measuring cone from Lakeland Plastics

It has Imperial, US and Metric voume markings.

There are similar products to be found in hardware or department stores
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
      he said, 'Don't count calories.'

If you cant find measuring cups (most large supermarkets and department stores have them) here is a free conversion programme I have found useful
        http://www.joshmadison.com/software/

A US cup measures 8 US fluid ounces which = 236.5 mls, so if you have a metric measuring jug you can see what a cup of anything amounts to.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

That's very helpful everyone. I've got a measuring jug I can use now I have the conversion. I think I need to start measuring veggies as I'm getting a little slap-dash when it comes to my 2-3 cups of the green stuff!
          Thanks,
