  • Exercise or not? That is the question!

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum and am on my second day of induction. I have a question regarding exercising...Does exercising during this phase decrease weight loss? I ask because you build muscle when you exercise so, if you exercise isn't the actual weight loss during induction inaccurate?

I am starting to walk with my husband... I have never really exercised before and am finding it difficult to motivate myself. I'm sure this will change in time but I hope that walking for 30 mins briskly counts as exercise. And I hope it's not interferring with potential induction weight loss....

You want to get healthy. You need to exercise to get healthy. Also, if you aren't exercising then you aren't doing Atkins (that's pretty much a direct quote from the book). It may slow your loss by a pound or two, but you will be fitter, healthier, and smaller because muscle takes up less room that fat. So the answer is.....exercise!!!! And yes - 30 minutes of walking is a good start. Make sure it's fairly brisk though - strolling doesn't elevate your heart rate. lol

there is no question about increasing or decreasing weight loss from exercise in Atkins phase one cause unless you are exercising you are not doing Atkins per Dr Atkins own words in chapter 15 of DANDR!

Re: Exercise or not? That is the question!

        Hello,

I am new to exercise to and I did not do it for the induction period and now I wish more that anything that I had. I lost weight during induction, but then after that I started exercising and the weight creeped up because of the exercise. I was very upset. It is best to incorporate exercise from DAY 1 so you can have the best and most accurate results and won't set yourself up for heartache later on when you try to add in exercise.

Plus, I have been at the same weight for three weeks now and the scale is still the same, but I am losing inches all over. I am shrinking instead of losing and shrinking is better really. I mean, who cares whether the scale says 550 or 120 if you fit into the size jeans that make you happy.

Weight is subjective due to your height, age and all of that. Inches though don't lie (except during TOM so don't measure then). So, please do yourself a long-term favor and begin with a little exercise now.

Get that heart rate up and the endorphines will kick in and you will feel great. As the wonderful Brook says, "dieting will make you look good in clothes, but diet and exercise will make you look good naked"!

Best of luck to you on your journey. We are all here to help you!

I lost 21 pounds back during induction in little more than a week. I couldn't have done that without exercise. If you watch The Biggest Loser, those guys exercise a lot, and pulling down two-digit losses for the week isn't unusual. Exercise is very important.

Everybody get away from the scale please. Just back away peacefully and everything will be alright. The benefits of exercise far outweigh any concerns about a silly number on a useless scale.

I agree with everyone else, you really do need to start exercising straight away, and although it may seem as if you do not lose as fast, you'll be happier and healthier for it Walking is great exercise and even better if you can do it with your husband as he can help keep you motivated.

I think many women just beginning an exercise regime vastly overestimate how many pounds of muscle the average woman gains from mere cardio. It's a lot less than you may think! I would relax and make the scale a secondary measurement of success. Learn to love the mirror, the tape measure, and how your clothes fit - that's the best gauge, in my opinion.

Re: Exercise or not? That is the question!

your 30 minute brisk walk will not build muscle it will help to improve your cardiovascular fitness and burn fat but it wont build muscle. if you want to tone your shape later on you need to start with weights, but you won't bulk up from them, you will tone and shape your existing muscles.
if you have never exercised a brisk walk is a great start, but you will need to move to something more strenuous later on.

Exercise is always important! Don't worry if you gain muscle because of it! after all gaining muscle is important for weight loss as well, because the more muscle you have the more your body also burns fat in the end.

                        Hi Again,
I'm really struggling with the work out part of my induction. Can anyone advise a workout routine that I should follow as a BEGINNER. I'm really stressed out here. I was lifting weights for 2 weeks and arms hurt so much I had to take a break. That break has lasted for 3 weeks now. What is the best way to stay on track? Is walking briskly for 20-30 mins everyday as well as rotating between pilates and weight lifting after a walk a good beginning or should I be doing something more? I been advised that I should walk more but right now I break a sweat and pant like crazy walking briskly for 30 mins. I don't want to overdo it before I get discouraged....

Exercise is non-negotiable. The good Dr. said so. If you aren't exercising, you're not doing Atkins.

You have to ease into exercise. Like anything else, you get better with practice. A brisk 20 or 30 minute walk is a good beginning. I've been using Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds videos which I picked up cheap at a flea market. These give a good workout but are easy for beginners. I don't know of a good weight program to suggest to you, but I'm sure someone else does. Just remember that you've got to move every day. If you overdo it and put yourself out of commission then you won't be able to move and that would be counter-productive. Go at your own pace and increase your endurance gradually. It won't take long before you'll be able to do lots of things without hurting yourself.
