  • Trouble Sleeping

The last few nights, I have been waking up at 4:00am in the morning ready to go. I can't and don't want to go back to sleep as I am wide awake and it's in my nature not to go back to sleep once I awake. (I know, this habit sucks especially on Saturday mornings ) Later on, in the day (afternoon) I become clouded can't think straight...obviously from the lack of sleep. My hubby thinks it's because I started an exercise regime but besides exercising I really don't do much walking or strenous activities throughout the day. Also when I awake, I have serious hunger pangs but they don't last long. I KNOW I'm eating enough probably more than enough so I don't know why I wake up hungry. I wonder also if these pangs are waking me up.

Is losing sleep common during induction?

    Re: Trouble Sleeping

Hi! Well, losing sleep isn't uncommon. Annoying but not unheard of. A lot of people get huge boosts of energy in the beginning that they weren't used to because the body has detoxed energy consuming carbs. In addition to that, exercise increases energy levels and your body has to adjust. However, the hunger pangs have me a little concerned. Atkins tends to act as a natural appetite suppressent. I would strongly suggest posting a typical daily menu. Sometimes people can spot things we overlook.

yep Atkins can do that to you. make good use of that up and attem time and get some stuff done. then you can relax during that brain fog time. ckeck your food logs and see if your blood sugar is dropping and giving you the fog.

It's good to find out that it is somewhat normal...How can I check if my blood sugar is dropping? Is this good or bad?

A couple of things in your post concern me....

          1. This clouded thinking in the late afternoon.
          2. Waking up at 4 AM hungry with hunger pangs.

These both sound like low blood sugar. I think you should see your doctor. The pre-diet labs, Dr. Atkins said we should have before beginning the diet, should be back by now and will give your doctor and you some insight into this.

            Re: Trouble Sleeping

I wake up really hungry also - I think that is pretty normal. If I drink some water before having something to eat then I don't feel hungry. Atkins has made me very in tune with my body, so I'm not surprised I'm really hungry when I wake up - after all, my stomach is empty and eating food gets everything going again. About getting less sleep - carbs have been known to cause a food "coma" where one sleeps really heavy and long and has a hard time getting out of bed in the morning. If you were that way at all, I'm sure you will be seeing a difference in your sleeping. Keep exercising - the harder you push yourself, the better you'll sleep. FYI - the more fit you get, the more efficient your body runs, thus, you may end up needing less sleep. Make sure you get an afternoon snack - especially when you get brain fog - preferably something high in fat like cheese and olives. Hope this helps.

Waking up after 7 or 8 hours of sleep and feeling hungry can be normal, but waking up at 4AM with severe hunger pains isn't. There's condition called nocturnal hypoglycemia and it needs to be evaluated by a physician.

                  Hi Everyone,

Thank you for posting your opinions about my situation. It's strange but I slept very well last night. Perhaps I needed time to adjust to the changes in my body. I read up today on blood sugar and I think I might have been a type B according to the DANDR. I will definately monitor my sleeping with everything else that I have been logging and if it continues to be a problem I will go to the doctor for testing. Thanks for alerting me, I do appreciate your responses.

                    Re: Trouble Sleeping

Yes, definitely, at first there are adjustment issues with sleep. I remember that!! I used to sleep ALOT, but when I started Atkins, suddenly, I needed alot less sleep!

Give yourself time .. things will balance out! Its just the new you in progress!

                      Re: Trouble Sleeping

I STILL get up at 4am a lot! Never did that before, not without an alarm clock. But I kind of like it. I get a lot done before the rest of the house comes to life. Of course, I am in bed very early that night as well. Starts a vicious cycle. I don't wake up starving though.
