  • Protein into Sugar...WHAT?!?!

    I just read the following:

"...the liver converts an average of 58% of the protein we eat into carbohydrates, and that the carbohydrates-from-protein are handled by the body just like "regular" carbohydrates. It is broken down into glucose by the simple water-related steps of hydrolysis; it is used for fuel to run the body; it is converted to glycogen and stored. If there is too much of it, it is converted into body fat."

Is there a way to lower our protein and...should we? It sounds like too much protein is bad for us. But how much is too much?

    Please advise....

    Induction ratios should be 65% fat/ 30% protein/5% carb

Stick right around there and you'll be fine. Don't make it harder than it is

The recommended intake for protein for normal people (not weight lifters or competitive athletes) is 1g to 1.5g per pound of Lean Body Mass, which conveniently works out well to the recommended percentages. So yes if you overindulge on protein 200-300 in one, the body will do one of two things. Eliminate the excess amino acids through waste processing (urine) or convert them into sugar through gluconeogenesis. Do the Diet as prescribed as you should be fine.

        Re: Protein into Sugar...WHAT?!?!

relax if you are doing Atkins correctly Dr Atkins knew that excess proteins were being converted into glucose in the liver ( but it does take energy to do this and the final resluts are more enrgy is used to generate liver sugar then from burning liver sugars from proteins). There are body parts that can only burn sugar fro fuel cause they lack mitochondrias like red blood cells so insread of eating sugar you use the some of the amino acids in some of your proteins and even the carbohydrate backbone of the fats as sugar to fuel them in very controlled ways.
The body doesn't just say woo hoo I got protein make some sugareither. making sugar from protein is one of the last choices of the body for protein usage and even then your blood sugar level has to be low enough to evoke the liver making sugar chemicals response.

Eat your Atkins as Dr Atkins created it and you should be a big loser with appetite and craving control too.
