  • Induction - A Little Help Please!?

    Hi,

I started the Induction 3 days ago and seem to be doing really well so far. I did forget to weigh myself before I started, but I will know if my clothes get bigger.

I'm having a few problems though, working out whether I am eating too much or too little of Salad and Veg....I don't do measuring in cups!!! The Atkins Induction Made Easy says 2-3cups of salad and the ANA original says between 8-12oz!!! That seems like a huge difference! I don't know which to follow!!!

Yesterday I worked out that I had 12g of net carbs....is that too little?!?!?

I am desperate to lose weight, so really really hoping that this will work, but am also getting really panicked by people saying they gained weight.....

Re: Induction - A Little Help Please!?

First of all, take a deeeeeeeep breath. AHHHHHHH That's better.

Congratulations on making it to day 3. It isn't as easy as it looks!! You should be very proud of yourself!!!

Okay, do you have DANDR, the 2002 edition? I would follow that book. It has everything together and for me, I'd rather have one resource, and this website, and that's it. Otherwise, I run into what's what, and get confused. After you've moved on, you can explore more, but for now, I'd stay with DANDR.

I would recommend getting and using the measuring cups. It makes it easier just putting it into a cup.

There were days I had 12 carbs. As long as you are eating ALL you veggies, you should be fine. Don't skimp on them...I did and it really messed me up.

I know how frustrating trying to lose weight is. I also know that Atkins does work, but it must be done properly, with the right mindset. Exercise, drink all your water, measure and eat all your veggies, and you know the rest...

If you do this with the only intention to lose weight, you will have a hard time. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it will be hard. This is changing your life. This is improving your health, and keeping it that way. That's why everyone calls it a way of eating, or a way of life. It's not a quick fix. I learned that the hard way. I lost 30, and gained every last pound back plus 5 in a month and a half!!!!!

Please don't be panicked by people saying they've gained weight. Think about it, they say at least 64 oz a day of water...that's 4 pounds!!! Drinking that much water allows your body to continue to burn off the weight the most efficiently. So it's better to have the water and lose weight then be afraid of it, and not drink. A LOT of people are also building muscle. I do that. I gain at first and then DROP suddenly. If you are building mucle, your body can also more efficiently lose weight. It raises your metabolism. So yes, so can gain, but it's not perminent, and it's all aiding in weight loss. Those who are exercising will gain mucle and lose weight and they will also have much less saggy skin if at all.

I would take your measurements today, weigh yourself today, and make a chart. DO NOT BE A SCALE SLAVE. I weigh myself everyday, b/c I like to see how I flucuate, but do not get on it everyday thinking you are going to see a change. You will have times where you lose inches, not weight, and that is great. That's when your jeans will get lose.

Please don't get discouraged, and remember, you can do this. It isn't easy, but nothing worth appreciating ever is. Just stick to it, and ask LOTS of questions. Remember we are all here for YOU and anything we can do to help, we'd love to!!! Keep up the great work!!!!

    Love and Hugs, Stephanie

Re: Induction - A Little Help Please!?

      Hin Stephanie,

THanks so much for your reply. I guess I need to be strict, but not stress it too much.

Cups are a very American measurement and it's hard to translate it to what I am used to in the UK.

When it says 1-2 cups of Salad, I see that as a handful, and try to have a handful of Lettuce and a handful of cucumber and celery at lunch and then a handful of broccoli or cauliflower with dinner. Sometimes I'll try and do half a cup (handful) od broc and half of cauli, to get two veg.

But I'm also wondering if I'm having enough fat? I used 1 tsb of double cream in the omlette this morning and have had an ounce of cheese so far today. I use about a tablespoon of olive oil in the evening and add in some more cheese and/or cream.

I am drinking about 2 litres of water a day...is that right?

I just want to lose the weight. My boyfriends sister had gone from a size 18 to a 10 since June!!!

Probably a bad time to start with the holidays coming too! But c'est la vie!! Cravings haven't been too bad so far and am swimming 30lengths a day.

Thanks again for your help. xxx

Have you ever heard of fitday.com? It's a wonderful site where you plug in everything you've eaten for the day and it tells you how much you've eaten. It's very helpful and it makes life so much easier. Do you know about the percentages? It's 65% fat/ 30% protein/5% carb. It shows the % and everything. You can also plug in what exercises you've done so you can see how many calories you've burned, compaired to how many you've eaten!! It's got everything, you should really check it out!!!

I still like cups better, b/c I don't have to get into the math, but if it's easier for you, go for it. Just be sure it's not too much.

        Do you own DANDR?

Yeah, I saw this and have signed up....but it's really hard to imput everything! The omlette I made from the Atkins recipe book this morning was 1.4g of carbs in the book, but shows up as 3g on fitday.com!!!! I can't get the measurements right again you see.

What is the long title of DANDR?

And I don't think I am eating enough fat...?

Oh, I'll just see how I get on for a bit. Am following the books as best I can.

            Thanks xxx

Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution. Sorry, I'm so used to shortening it, I didn't even think about it!! My apoligies.

              Is the recipe induction friendly?

If you get a chance, write down the recipe. The Atkins recipe could be net carbs, and fit day might not be.

And as js mentions we follow Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002, DANDR for short, so all our advice is based on that book.
Sounds like you are on the right track. Your carbs will float around from day to day, so don't worry about that unless they stay consistently low for a long time. Most folks report an average of about 12 to 17 carbs. Some folks say they feel better when they have close to 20 each day...everyone is different.

So get the book and become familiar with the Rules of Induction and the Acceptable Food list in it, and carry on!

                  Emzina - Hi - another UK'er here.

I think over here DANDR is a bit different. It shows weights in grams and ounces not cups.

You can have 230-340g of the salad veggies and 140-200g of the other veggies if your salads don't go over 230g.

If you buy the book in Smith's or Waterstones or any decent shop you will get the 2002 version.

You were all loads of help. I think I need to just relax a little bit about it. Now I've got to worry about what the **** I am going to eat when we go out for dinner tonight and Sunday!!!!

I forgot to weigh myself at the start of the induction (Monday), the last time I weighed myself, about 4 weeks ago andI was 13st 5lbs so 187lbs..but this morning I was 181lbs...I'm not sure if that's all Atkins, as only on day 4 of Induction.....but still!!! Dead chuffed!!!

Only had carb cravings today though....had sugar cravings all 4 days!!!!

No, we're going out for dinner, so have to find something that way.

Since people have found out I've started Atkins, they are all telling me that it's really bad for me, that my arteries will clog up, etc etc. Even my other half who keeps praising his sister for losing loads of weight on this diet!

                          I feel like I can't win.

                            Ok....I'm really confused!

Am I counting carbs or counting fat or both?!?!

I cannot get to grips with that fitday.com at all, and have been sticking to under 20g of carbs a day.

I use a tablespoon of cream in the morning if I do an omlette, and if frying I use a tablespoon or two of Olive oil. Throughout the day I have 3 tsp of Mayo and maybe between 1-3oz of cheese depending. (this obviously isn't everyday, but I've been counting carbs not fat but going by the recipes)

I'm getting so confused on this diet and I thought it was meant to be fairly easy!!!! Maybe I'm worrying too much

                              You're counting carbs.

Some people follow their fat intake because they have a hard time including fat into their diet---the result of being thoroughly brainwashed by the "fat is bad" diets.

If you follow the rules of the diet, you won't have to "count" your fat intake because it will fall into place for you. for that matter, if you are follow the Rules of Induction strictly, you won't even have to count your daily carbs because Dr. Atkins figured it out for us. But I don't suggest doing that because you need to get used to counting them as you progress through the diet. If you insist on eating low fat or have a problem eating fat, then you might need to follow your fat intake (some people try to do a "low fat" version of Atkins---which makes it a high protein diet, which Atkins isn't.)

To be perfectly honest with everyone here, when I was doing Induction, I counted only my carbs and kept track of everything by jotting it down in a notebook. To get my added fat, I sauteed my vegetables in olive oil or I used oil and vinegar dressings on my salad greens. Whatever oil stuck to those veggies, I ate. I didn't eat additional tablespoons of mayonnaise or butter. I didn't eat 1/2 pound of bacon or dip bacon in mayonnaise or whatever.

If you read the sticky above called "How much fat do I need to eat", you'll see that it takes very little added fat to get into that fat percentage.
