  • Question?

I have the atkins essentials book for now, i do plan to get the new diet revolution 2002 soon though. I'm planning to start my induction on monday. I have found this site to be overwhelmingly helpful, educational, and motivating. A big thank you to everyone who has helped make it an informative and genuinely caring site . After reading alot of forums i have a few questions. Is it possible to overeat protein, in the book it says you dont need to limit yourself on meat/eggs(besides the exceptions) but each egg counts as 1 carb unit, do we need to count meat the same, or can we really eat as much as we would like? Also i'm afraid that i wont eat a balance of meat and fats, i can see myself eating more meats than the oils/fats suggested. I know the book suggests the essential fatty acids supplement but i have a very hard time swallowing pills(i have to take the flintstone chewable vitamins). If there are any tips of recipes to get a healthy dose of protien and fats please enlighten me. Thanks!

    Re: Question?

Boy are you in for a shock when you read DANDR DR ATKins warns us repeatedly about overeating our proteins cause proteins in excess are converted to sugar for storage and that sugar will be in your blood stream spiking your insulin levels before it ever gets stored.

We are supposed to ONLY eat enough food to satisfy our hunger and stop nomater what kind of food it is.

Atkins is a Ketogenic plan and that means we use dietary fats to prime the engines so to speak to burn body stoarge fats for fuel. only 30% of your total cals should be proteins 65% should be fats. you can use the free online site www.fitday.com to log your foods and see how you are doing. we have a FAQ topic about how to set up your account if you need help.

    Happy low carbing.

      Re: Question?

You can certainly overeat your meat. However during your first 14 days, I would not be counting anything but your carbs and the limited food allotments (cheese, cream, and of course veggies). The first 14 days you are mostly focusing on breaking your cravings and sweet tooth by dramatically altering your eating style. Yes, you should only eat until you are satisfied, but really focus on getting your diet and what goes into your mouth under control. In the end, your Caloric percentages during Induction should be 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs as 2big says. You shouldn't have to worry about overdoing your protein when your percentages are inline.

In that case you will have to plan to eat the fattier meats.
Choose chicken with the skin on, leave the fat on bacon, ham and pork and eat it all!
If making a recipe that calls for skinless chicken I peel the skin off and fry it to make my own 'chicken rinds' to snack on!!
There is a good sticky on this forum about how much fat we need to eat with good suggestions on how to up your fat if needed

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

          Hi wanabmrsbateman!
I am on day 6 of induction and am still learning alot about this way of eating but what I can tell you is take the above advise and go into www.fitday.com and plug in your food. You will be amazed at the places your fat will come from--eggs, butter (I cook everything in it!!) bacon, salad dressings made with mayo and there will be some in cheese too. It's really not hard!

          Good luck!!
