Flavored Water.. Help.. Question

  • Flavored Water.. Help.. Question

    I live in MAasachusetts I shop at Stop and Shop, they sell there own brand Clear Splash Sparkling Water Beverage. I want to make sure this is ok, to drink not in place of water but for something different.

    Nutrition Facts:

    Serving Size:8 fl oz
    Servings Per Container: About 4

    Amount per serving:
    Calories:0g
    Sodium:0mg
    Total Carbohydrates:0g
    Sugars:0g
    Protein:0g


    Ingredients:
    Carbonated water,citric acid,natural flavor,aspartame,potassium citrate,potassium benzoate(a perservative),malic acid.

    Your help with this would be great!

    Aspartame is not on the 'allowed list' of sweeteners, so try to find one that uses one of the recommended ones.

    Artificial Sweeteners
    You must determine which artificial sweeteners agree with you, but the following are allowed: sucralose (marketed as Splenda), saccharin, cyclamate and acesulfame-K. Natural sweeteners ending in the suffix "-ose," such as maltose, fructose, etc., should be avoided. However, certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

    Saccharin has been extensively studied, and harmful effects were produced in the lab when fed to rats only in extremely high doses. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has removed saccharin from its list of carcinogens, basing its decision upon a thorough review of the medical literature and the National Institute of Science's statement that there is "no clear association between saccharin and human cancer." It can be safely consumed in moderation, meaning no more than three packets a day. Saccharin is marketed as Sweet'n Low.

    We discourage the use of aspartame (marketed as NutraSweet and Equal) because of clinical observations that it slows weight loss in certain individuals. The FDA has approved the herb stevia for use only as a supplement, not as a sweetener.

    The Atkins preference, however, is sucralose (Splenda), the only sweetener made from sugar. Sucralose is safe, noncaloric and does not raise blood sugar. It has been used in Canada for years, and the FDA recently approved it after reviewing more than 100 studies conducted over the past 20 years. Note that each packet of sugar substitute contains about 1 gram of carbohydrate, so don't forget to include the amount in your daily totals

        Just a reminder to all the newbies that only water counts as water, and anything you drink other than that does not count towards your daily 64+ ounces a day.

          If you want a flavored water, there is one made by Pepsi Co. (I forget the brand--maybe Aquafina) that is sweetened with splenda. I didn't like it because it wasn't carbonated, it was just flavored water! But it might be good to try, though it would definitely not be a water replacement and you would have to count the sweetener in your daily limit.

              How about adding a slice of lemon or cucumber to your water? I love plain water but I know some people around here have tried that and they like it.

                  Aspartame MAY cause stalling, it varies for each person. I try to stick with Splenda, but aspartame hasn't given me any problems. If it were me, I would go ahead and drink them since you bought them and see how they do. Again.. that is ME. Decide for yourself. YMMV

                  Fruit2 0 is splenda sweetened. That Pepsi brand water that was mentioned earlier is Aquafina FlavorSplash and it's sweetened with splenda too.

                    Lemon juice is allowed, but only 2-3 tablespoons.
                    It is listed under the 'acceptable beverages' section of the allowed list

                    check on that list for how many carbs a fluid ounce is (2 Tablespoons = 1 fluid ounce)
                    I am not sure how much actual juice you would be taking in from a slice of lemon in your water, so maybe allow say 1/2 a teaspoon for each slice used? Maybe someone else will know how much juice there is in one slice of lemon!!

                    But dont eat the lemon after drinking the water, as citrus fruits are not legal till the 'other fruits' rung (level) of OWL!

                      Hi Princess Leah, Sometimes when i need something other than water i drink ice tea from Lipton. Lipton has a carb options product that is decaffeinated ice tea mix made with splenda . This is induction friendly but like others have mentioned dont forget to count the splenda carbs. I count every 8oz. as 1 carb unit. I like this when i need a break from water(not a substitute but just a refreshing change). Good luck!

                          Well, I've been drinking flavored water since I started Atkins and I have still been successful in losing weight. The water I drink is not flavored with aspartame and it's not carbonated. I honestly can't drink plain water... I never have been able to. I'm strange, I know.

                            Nestle makes "Rasberry splash" and "Lemon Splash"--both are sweetened with Splenda--no carbs, no calories. Each bottle is 2 servings so counts as 2 sweeteners. They are good, almost too sweet for me now--so I dilute it with water. My super skinny daughter (10 y. o.) wants us to make popsicles out of them, so they must taste o.k.
