  • Ketosis!!?!?

    Everyone keeps talking about ketosis, but how they are anti the "strips". What are the other signs I will know when I have reached ketosis. I am on day 8! Shouldn't I be in it?!?! My friend told me that I would not be as hungry.. but that sure isn't always happening. Please explain!

    Breath that could knock over small farm animals.
    Nasty taste in your mouth.
    Stonger odor to sweat/urine (yeah...pretty, I know.)
    Increased thirst.
    Decreased hunger.
    Decrease in the amount of sleep you need.
    Increase in energy.

    Those are some of the ones that I notice first in ketosis. By the time I'm popping a Listerine strip or I get real thirsty, I know I can spend the $10 I'd have spent on keto stix on something else

    General rule of thumb for success: If it requires a degree in chemical engineering to pronounce it, you probably shouldn't eat it.

      The only reason I even have ketostix is because I'm diabetic, and insurance paid for them. My main symptom is excessive thirst and lots of bathroom visits. Lipolysis/ketosis generates extra urea which makes you go quite a lot at first. LOVELY!

        I never used the sticks and I never knew to look for signs of ketosis until I joined the board...which was about two weeks after I was into Induction. All I did was follow the Rules of Induction, ate correctly from the Acceptable Foods List and trusted that Dr. Atkins knew what he was saying, and by golly, he did!
        I haven't really noticed 'symptoms' of ketosis...and I fluctuate from having hungry days to not very hungry days, but I've dropped the weight, so I just trust in the diet as laid out in DANDR.

        Some folks may take a bit longer to get into ketosis due to a high metabolic resistance, but generally, if you are following the diet correctly, you'll be in ketosis. Save your money on the sticks and use it to buy the new clothes you're going to need!

          Ok awesome! Thanks for all the remarks made so far. I really appreciate it. I think my sister and I just needed some clarification and reassurance this is going to work for us. THANKS!

            actually some for those aren't ketosis at all.
            ketosis by Dr Atkins definition just means burning fats for fuel.

            it is the excess not burned up broken down fatty acids parts and after burn molecules that are bundled by the body into ketones ( see we don't get that acid build up in our muscles from ketosis like high carber do from glucosis )

            The getting rid of those ketone bodies in various forms can give "smell" signs. exhaled ketones are actually acetone molecules and should smell fruity not bad same for the urine change in smell from the acetoacetate form.

            increased thirst and increased uriniation are related to the Atkins diet's diuretic effect.

            The taste in the mouth is actually ketone bodies in your saliva being tasted by your tongue. some folk call it metalic others lightly sweet. Again it depends on what excess ketone bodies are floating around in your blood stream not being burned up for fule in other parts of the body not working as hard as those areas where there wasn't enough oxygen to complete the 2 carbon stage reaction.

            The appetite suppression is a side effect of Atkins ketosis but only when the fat% in the diet is high. As we move to premaintneance we lose that great tool.

            All of those are signs you are eating your Atkins correctly.

            the reason we say don't use the stix is all they measure is the excess amount of acetoacetate in your blood stream that spilled out into your urine at that time and if your ketones are floating around as acetone it will not even show. Also if you have drunk 100 ounces of water you will show a lower concentration and color then somebody who has drunk only 10 if you both have the same amount of ketones in your urine.
