  • The best foods to eat on atkins?

What are the best foods to eat on atkins health wise? I know there has been a lot of talk about atkins not being the healthiest diet in the world, but there has to be a healthy route to take on it? What are some examples of food on the healthier side to eat while do induction and OWL? Your help would be great.

    Hi Megs,

Did you read DANDR or go to the links Rich posted in your other thread? No one here thinks this way of eating (WOE) is unhealthy so it's hard to answer that question. Stay away from bad carbs. Eat only foods that are on the acceptable for induction list and drink lots of water. Personally, I eat 2 - 5 eggs a day, red meat a couple of times a week, cook things in oil and butter....I feel great, I'm not hungry and I'm losing weight. What more can you ask for?

As ladyinred said - most of us here dont think Atkins is an unhealthy way of eating at all.

I am nearly through my OWL journey and so I can eat virtually anything that isnt processed with transfats and sugar in it!

To turn your question to a different path - what about this way of eating do you feel is unhealthy?

If you tell us what foods worry you then perhaps we can help you and anyone else visiting the board who has similar concerns feel more comfortable with Atkins eating.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I myself do not think atkins is unhealthy, but members of my family and friends as me to take an alternate route in living a healthy lifestyle. Yes, I have read the book and know that there must be some foods that are more beneficial to your bodies than others. LIke some may promote a faster weight loss and others may provide more nutriants or give more energy. I am worried that there arent too many options of eating and afraid of slipping because I am not very creative in thinking up different ways of eating protein and green veggies. I'm just afraid if I continue to eat large amounts of protein my body wont be able to digest it. It does take 24 hours for the human body to digest red meat, so is it better to eat chicken and white fish? Olive oil is okay, but when you cook it it turns into trans fat, so is butter better, and how much should you have? is cooke zero okay to have for my soda cravings? lots of questions, and dont want to be annoying with tons of new posts. I really do aprreciate the help on everything.

We dont eat 'large amounts' of protein on Atkins, Megs.
Our fat/protein/carbs ratio is supposed to be about 65%/30%/5% in induction, and the protein ratio stays the same throughout the phases.

Have you tried using www.fitday.com to see exactly how much protein you are eating?

Here is a sticky about using it to help you log your foods.

Some say saturated fats are bad, but there are studies showing that it can actually be GOOD for you. Just stay away from trans fat and other junk to stay healthy.

Re: The best foods to eat on atkins?

Megs.. There are plenty of options and many substitutes you can make for high carb foods like faux mashed potatoes (cauliflower). I'm am certainly NO chef, but if you check out the recipe link at the top of the page, I'm sure you'll find recipes that you will like. I personally love many of them. That's something that I LOVE about this WOE, I've tried so many different foods and recipes that I never would've thought about before. I bought tofu the other day. I never would've done that before. Try Dana Carpender's cookbooks. They are great and have "real" recipes that us cooking dummies would actually make. I have the 15 minute book and the 500 LC recipes one. She's very down to earth and fun. She doesn't include all those exotic ingredients that you'll never use again. lol

If you follow the plan, you WILL be eating healthy. Have any doubters read the book. If they refuse, then don't worry about what they say because they don't know what they're talking about and they don't want to understand. I know that can be hard, but if YOU believe in it, then do it. It's your life/health after all!

I don't know anything about coke zero (cuz I'm a pepsi gal lol) but if you can find something with splenda, try that. Diet Rite is made with splenda and their "Tangerine" flavor is really good. I personally drink some diet pepsi and it doesn't affect my weight loss, but some people stall with aspartame. You DO have to limit it though. You're allowed 3 sweetners/day and you have to get your water in.

                I hope this helps.

Re: The best foods to eat on atkins?

The best foods you can eat on any diet are whole, minimally processed foods. So real cheese, real eggs, real meat and fresh or frozen vegetables are the way to go.

Protein comprizes only 30-35% of your daily calories. So if you are eating 1000 calories, you will be eating 300 calories worth of protein, which translates into roughly 75 grams which is the equivalent of eating 2 chicken breasts, 2 eggs, and 2 ounces of cheddar cheese for the entire day. Not to mention vegetables contain amounts of protein that are counted towards your daily protein total.

So don't think you have to eat the equivalent of a side of beef in order to do Atkins properly. Because you don't.

As for your family, ask them what is so unhealthy about eating whole, minimally processed foods without added sugars? Because that what you should be doing on Atkins. You eat enough vegetables on Induction to satisfy the USDA's 5 daily servings.

If you choose the right vegetables (ie the ones with the highest nutritional values) you will be doing more for your body and your general health than if you stick to the ones with relatively lower nutrient values. There are plenty of veggies on the Induction list that are nutrient powerhouses.

The time you will get into nutritional troubles is when you begin making poor nutritional choices. For example, you spend 5 net carbs on Splenda and heavy cream instead of spending them on veggies (or fruits and grains when you get to OWL).

Re: The best foods to eat on atkins?

I just noticed that you wrote "olive oil turns to trans fat" i don't believe and maybe someone else can jump in here, but olive oil is a natural oil- it doesn't turn into anything when cooked. trans fats are fats that have been altered by chemicals- that is why they are bad- olive oil when cooked does not change through chemicals.

Re: The best foods to eat on atkins?

I'm glad someone addressed that as I've never heard that olive oil tuns into trans fat. Trans fats are hydrogenated oils that have been scientifically designed on a molecular level to keep a certain texture at room temperature. One of the reasons why these are bad for you is that the body has a hard time processing these designer oils at our temp of 98 degrees because they are designed to stay solid at warmer temperatures. Olive oil (unless it has been hydrogenated) does not pose any health risks when cooked poured straight from the bottle.
