  • are your friends/family supportive?

some of my friends seem to be annoyed with me that i'm not going out drinking and that i'd rather broil some salmon and have a salad than order in pizza. they've told me i'm "nuts." i'm having lots of early success (was down 10 pounds at the 1 week mark) and the only "nuts" thing to me would be to say that i'd rather have pizza and a few cocktails than a healthier body. i will note, that it's my heavier friends who fall off their diets routinely that seem to think that i'm bonkers (one even formerly lost 60 pounds on atkins). everyone else is proud of my dedication and progress. i was actually nervous about telling my parents because i thought they'd think it was a fad diet. they've been the most supportive of all.

Girls get really catty when they see someone looking better than them; that's just a fact of life that you have to learn to deal with. There are naysayers everywhere regardless of what diet you are on.

My parents are very supportive of me because I've always struggled with yo-yo weight lose and gain my entire life. My friends are pretty supportive because they see that I am happier and excited about life. My boyfriend is sort of ambivalent about it, he is happy I've found a new lifestyle but while others compliment my new look he'll say "Eh, you haven't lost hardly anything below the waist." Ho hum.

Either way, I feel good, and no one's opinion could change my mind.

Some people take it personally as though you are criticizing them for their behaviour. You know you aren't doing that, but they know they probably shouldn't be eating that crap either. They probably don't mean to be unsupportive, but you are changing the rules by not going with the flow and that throws people off. Hopefully they will come around and see that your good health is the important thing.

yeah. i think on some level it's a jealousy/guilt thing. it doesn't really get under my skin, i was just wondering if it was normal.

killerbombshell - you've lost 40 pounds already! your boyfriend must be blind.

          Re: are your friends/family supportive?

I'm fortunate to have a very supportive boyfriend and friends.
I do have a problem with a few people in that they are heavy, and I feel a bit guilty when I'm wanting to share a success with them. I don't want to come across as bragging, and I know they are happy for me, but I don't want them to feel badly...know what I mean?
It's a bit of an uncomfortable spot to be in.

yeah. i am doing my best to avoid sounding preachy or like a broken record about my diet. that's part of the beauty of these boards. i can be obsessive here and not drive my friends bonkers.

              Re: are your friends/family supportive?

This is my opinion: These people, no matter what their relationship to you are being destructive towards you. You should not be understanding at all.

If friends don't support your decision to get healthy - lose them

If a boyfriend is just being an idiot and won't support you - dump him.

If your parents are not being supportive - have little to do with them (okay if you live far away :P)

We were not meant to live this life as Obese Drunks. That's not fun to me!

People live in abusive relationships for a lifetime, and slowly each day, their self esteem and soul is eroded.

Friends come and go, but you are with your own body until you die.
