  • Question about ketosis?

So I must be in ketosis if I am not really all that hungry ever, right? Well, we are instructed to only eat when hungry. We are also told not to go more than 6 waking hours without eating?

I have been eating only because I know I am supposed to and I am doing the 5-6 smaller meals trying to regulate my insulin levels, etc. This is because I have a high metabollic resistance and inherently have my mother's slow thyroid issue on the mind.

So which is better to follow? Should I just eat the way I am...? I need help because I only have 20+ pounds to go which seems so close, but also so far away because I can't lose a pound to save myself! Ugh -

The rules state, you go no more than 6 waking hours without eating. You can divide your meals anyway you want: so if you can't manage 3 large meals, eat several smaller meals.

The trick is to make sure that all your meals are combinations of fats, proteins and carbs. So munching on celery sticks for a meal isn't a good idea unless you munch on some kind of protein and fat too because the fat and protein will help to slow the insulin response.

As for eating only when you are hungry....I don't recall that being in the book because the wonderful thing about Atkins is that appetite suppressing effect of ketosis, so the only times you are hungry is when you haven't eaten enough to satisfy your energy needs.

      Re: Question about ketosis?

Ok - well I've heard a lot so I just wanted more clarification. I really do need to read DANDR again, but like I said I am student and reading for 'fun' is impossible right now. Maybe after my tests are over I will slack a little on the textbooks and try to fit in some time to read it.

I am only eating smaller meals more frequently in hopes that it will be better for my metabolism and by helping that insulin release. I definitely read up on the meals and have been having very controlled meals.

      (7/8 am) B-fast: 2 friend eggs
2 peices of protein (Turkey/bacon/sausage/leftover hamburger, etc)

or sometimes I make a scramble with eggs, chedder, protein, and peppers...

(10/11 am) Snack: No sugar added sliced turkey with cream cheese
OR lunch meat with a cheese stick

(1/2 pm) Lunch: Tuna w/ mayo and cheddar on cucumber slices

(4/5 pm) Snack: Hard boiled egg(s) or cheese stick, etc.

      * WORK OUT TIME * - Typically 6 - 7:30 pm
I use the stationary bike to warm up. Level 3: very light resistance almost none. I use that for 30 minutes. Then I jog/run for about 30 minutes so about 3 miles (I am working on moving up to the 10K). When I don't run or feel like going to the gym on campus... I use the gym in my apt complex, in which I then do an hour on the elliptical machine. I also have an exercise ball that I am terrible about using.... it comes and goes in spirts, but lately I have only found time to stretch after my workouts and not done too much else. 1 day a week I am usually good about doing some weight training as well.

      Go home finally!

      (8/9 pm) Dinner: 3-4 oz Pork/Chicken/Turkey/Hamburger/Turkey burger/Steak
Salad or green beans or steamed broccoli
w/ cheese/o carb ranch/ or low carb creamy ceasar/or carb options bbq sauce /or carb options steak sauce. However *most of the time I have dijon mustard and ceasar as my side dipping sauce and some form of cheese melted over my meat.

So how is this looking? I use fitday too and I seem to be doing fine in percentages.

        Re: Question about ketosis?

actually it is in DANDR as Dr Atkins says to eat only enough to satisfy your hunger and he also says when you have to eat and are not hungry to only a smal amount of your carbs with a fat or protein food.

those don't look like small meals to me. Since you have insulin issues as Not2late stated you need to spread your carbs out to each meal too so add a bit of veggies to your eggs use a lettuce leef in your roll up or chop some veggies up in your cream cheese. add some veggie sticks to the afternoon snack.

think of it like this you are an engine that runs well on Atkins ratio 65/30/5 fuel. just like a race car you can't fuel up on low octane at some meals and high octan at one and expext them to average out your results. you are gettin very low insulin at many of them and then a higher does from the bolus effect of all thoe veggies at dinner. Even out your insulin through out the day and your reistance will diminish just as Dr Atkins said

          Re: Question about ketosis?

I thought I was doing well, but thanks for the input! I really appreciate it - I am really good at routines and this is only day 3 for me now of this new change in my eating habits. Thanks for the support.

I know I eat most of my carbs/veggies no sooner than lunch because of the appeal of veggies first thing in the morning or the fact I am commuting all over campus and town with only my handbag for books. I better figure something out soon though -

            Re: Question about ketosis?

add a few chopped veggies to your eggs will work. Many folk don't realize but as you move up in Atkins you will be eating more and more vegies and carbs so strating your habits now will ensure you have them down pat by the time you reach goal. According to Dr Atkins goalies eat 6-8 cups of veggies a day. already you are having about 6 USDA serving size serivng ( yep Atkins is actually a high low glycemic veggie diet too)

When you do the 5-6 meal thing you take the food you would have in 3 meals and spread it out to those meals so they are much snmaller but the daily total is the same.. then if like after your workouts you are really hungry you have more to eat cause Dr Atkins tells us in the book to eat only enough food to satisfy our hunger. if you are uspposed to eat from your menu 4 ounces of meat, some fat and veggies but aren't hungry then have just one ounce of meat some fat and some of those vegies. Your hungry will tell you if you had too little at those times and you can eat again later. If youhave ever seen a totdler eat youknow what feeing your hunger ia all abiout they will look to be a very light picky eater for a few days and then poof they are wolfing down food. then it starts again that is feeding your hunger something many of us were taught not to do with the clean plate club type stuff parents used to encourage us to eat what they thought we needed.

            Happy low carbing.
