  • Dinner out!

I had dinner out at a restaurant today for the first time since starting induction,I thought there might be a problem from the offset as our waitress struggled when i said id have an iced water, "you mean ice? or tap water?" "both, ideally" "oh ok i'll bring you both, and here she arrived with a glass of ice and a glass of water! lol... anyway i thought i chose well from the carb-laden menu and picked cajun chicken with a mixed side salad.. i figured all that the cajun could be would be spices and hardly any sugar as its not a very sweet seasoning like chinese or anything.. my lordy what arrived on my plate was less than impressive.

A mountain of chopped salad vegetables, it looked like theyd let an angry kid hack it to pieces and it laden with some sort of dressing which i DIDNT ask for! nor did it say it would come with it on the menu. And a tough as old boot piece of chicken, not to mention a super-size serving of school-dinner like peas. Anyway i tasted my chicken and it was sooooooooooo hot i couldnt taste another thing but as everything else was covered in dressing i ate it and polished off my water. I ate about a quarter of a tomato that was hiding under a lettuce leaf and so wasnt drenched in dressing and then i swapped my boyfriend for some salad he had but my oh my i was disappointed. I was full though after i ate my chicken and the salad i did eat so i didnt feel hungry just a bit disappointed that it was totally crap!

To top it all off we went to a bar for a couple drinks *i had water with a wedge of lime* and sat down and just out of curiosity i checked the menu and they do "extra low carb" sirloin steak salad which was about £4 cheaper than my meal lesson learned there then!!!

Oh and i didnt feel a bit envious of my boyfriend who sat and eat an entire plate of nachos with cheese salsa and olives to himself then scoffed curly fries with a bbq cheese quarter pounder and a huge serving of coleslaw!! heheh thankyou dr atkins!!!!

    Re: Dinner out!

Good job on minding the carbs when it could have gone much worse. The salad dressing was a surprise that may or may not have been mentioned on the menu. I always ask for dressing on the side so I can control how much goes on my salad. Being from Louisiana, the home of true cajun food, I can only imagine what the Scottish version of cajun tasted like. It should be spicy but not hot enough to burn away your taste buds.

Again, great job on the dinner and drinks. Keep up the good work.

Always ask for the dressing to be on the side. SAme thing with any sauces they try to douse onto your food.

Otherwise, I think you did well. With time, you'll learn how to get "legal" meals while eting out.

Around here, it's very unusual to get a salad with the dressing on it already. Most places the dressing is in a little bowl on the side. I wish they did that everywhere.

            Re: Dinner out!

I always insist on no dressing and sauces on the side. I always have, even before Atkins. If I'm unsure about a new place, I ring and ask them before we go. I HATE food swimming in sauce. I like to taste what I have ordered, otherwise I'd order sauce with chicken (or whatever)! I've always had trouble with the salad dressing. The amazed looks I get - you mean you don't want that salad with flavouring (my name for dressing). I never eat salad dressings, to me they all taste awful. Just be form - you're the one paying for them to SERVE you, you're not eating for their convenience.

              Absolutely, Odille!

I also never used to have dressings or gravy, custard or cream on foods before Atkins, so have got used to being seen as 'awkward' by family/friends and waiting staff!

In fact when I was at school and ate school dinners in the 60's I was the only girl in the school who had an 'excused custard and gravy' note signed by the head mistress after the one time I was forced to eat custard and was spectacularly sick!!

But as you say - although I would never say 'the customer is always right' I would say 'the customer should get what she has ordered' no matter how different it is from the 'normal' menu.

Otherwise I dont eat it and dont pay for it! (and dont return to that restaurant after writing to the owner giving my reasons)
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
