  • Intro and induction questions.

Hi, I am new. First post! I started a week ago and I was doing well. No cheats, plenty of water, eating my vegi's etc.... In fact, I think that a few days I exceeded the 3 cups. I was even getting by drinking a 24 ouncer of black coffee each morning. No problems, I had the funny taste in my mouth and extra energy. I lost 13 pounds in my first week.

I actually started a weight loss club on another forum where I participate. 30 or so members have jumped aboard. I turned it into kind of a contest where there will be prizes for folks who meet there goal etc.... Should be good motivation. Here is the link. http://www.uplandjournal.com/cgi-bin...T;f=15;t=18380

Anyway, as you know Valentines day was yesterday I had a date with my wife. I was tired so I caved in and bought one of those Diet Rock Star drinks as the gas station. There is the nutritional info. http://www.rockstar69.com/rs06/images/diet_info.gif I drank that, wow that was sweet after nothing but water. Then we got home and my wife had made a nice dinner which she thought was OK for my diet. She cooked chicken in the crock pot then put in some cream cheese, mushrooms, and cream of mushroom soup (lots of carbs from reading the lable). In the past we always had that dinner over rice. I passed on the rice and ate it anyway.

That was a long story to get to my question and problem. Today, there is no more funny taste in my mouth. I think I threw myself out of ketosis. I want to know how many carbs it takes to throw you out of ketosis and how long it usually takes to get back by following the less than 20 carbs rule.

    Great forum here. Thanks!!!

it takes one more carb then your metabilosm will tolerate. you will be back in it as soon as you burned off the carbs. you can be back in it lightly and not have the tast in your mouth.

Chalk yesterday up as a learning experience and keep doing. the caffeine may not be effecting you now but as you get closer to goal you will see the effects more.

Hello and welcome! I think as far as how many carbs throw us out of ketosis varies depending on how our bodies manage food. We're all different. It's great that you passed on the rice and I probably wouldn't worry about the small amount of the mushroom soup that went in. Since you are still officially on induction, stick with it and you'll be back in ketosis before you know it.

I agree. Just follow the rules of induction and you'll be fine.

How heavenly to have a partner to cook for you. I'm envious!!! Give that wondeful gal a hug!

Everyone makes a mistake or two during induction. Don't worry about it. Just keep going.

            Re: Intro and induction questions.

12 Volt, I was just browsing your UJ site and I think it's great. Of course, there is a lot of "modified" atkins talk on there. As others say countless times on this board, read the book as it really gives some insight into the why's and how's of this plan. The stickys in these forums will give you the "rules" but real insight (and success) comes with reading about the science which is in the book. It really will make you think.

This is my second go-around with Atkins. The first go-round I didn't follow the plan in its entirety. Oh I followed the rules of induction--I drank water, and ate 3 cups of vegetables and stayed under 20g of carbs a day. How is that not following the plan?? I stayed on induction (which many people do with success) the whole time (5 months). I didn't "climb the rungs" and add the different foods back into my diet. Therein lies the problem. The allure of losing weight faster by staying on induction longer tempted me to not add foods back (Fruits, Nuts, Dairy products other than cheese, Legumes and YES Whole grains). Then I got bored, or hit a stall and "fell off the wagon". When I returned to my old habits--stuffing my face with chips, pizza, soda, bread, cake, candy, ice-cream--of course I gained the weight back and more!

This time around I'm taking the advice of the people here who have lost the weight and kept it off--people like Richt, Brooke, 2big, cleo, iapetus, and many many more. I've added more vegetables back, I'm trying new foods that I'd never considered eating before. I'm making a conscious effort to find foods and recipes that are tasty and leave me feeling satisfied because I've eaten something that has satisfied my stomach, my taste-buds, and my brain.

What prompted me to post this (in addition to reading the posts on your UJ site) was that today my boss said that South Beach was a better diet, that it allows you to have "normal" food like fruit etc. I've read both DANDR and the South Beach Diet and I can't really find much difference except the order in which SB allows you to have those foods and eating low fat meats and cheeses. She then said that you can't sustain Atkins for the long haul. You know what--she's right and she's wrong. Most people can't (and SHOULDN'T) sustain INDUCTION for the long haul. This is where the misconception about Atkins comes in--the Atkins diet isn't just INDUCTION. This is where MY misconception lead me astray the first go round. And I don't want to do this again. I want to be a success story like Brooke, 2Big, Richt, ttdriver, cleo, etc. etc. etc.

I hope that you take the time to read about Dr. Atkins approach. Get your bloodwork done from your doctor--I'm waiting for my most recent tests to come back and hopefully I'll have more "hard science" there to keep me on track.

My mind is starting to wander, so I'm just going to add one more thing--that exercise will do miracles. I started exercising on my elliptical machine and doing those Slim in Six videos people on here rave about and I lost 4 inches off each thigh within the first few weeks. 4 INCHES OUT OF EACH THIGH! Now that's a success if I ever heard one!!

              Re: Intro and induction questions.

Thanks for the insight. I agree that sticking to the program and not doing anything "modified" will be best. My original way of thinking was that hopefully once I lose the weight I can become more active. Once I am more active I can watch what I eat.

For now..... I am sticking to the program without modification. (Well, sort of. I am not giving up morning coffee just yet. LOL.) I am motivated and I am on a life changing mission. It is time to be skinny again. Good luck to all.

I have had trouble giving up my 'morning coffee' also, but have cut down to 1/2 cup and hope to be off totally soon. Good luck, keep up the good work!
