  • Fat Fast anyone?

I am fairly new here and have been only lurking. I am on day 11 of induction and currently have lost 6lbs. I was just curious if anyone here has tried the Fat Fast and if they did was it helpful or not?

      Re: Fat Fast anyone?

In DANDR 2002, Dr. Atkins wrote that the Fat Fast is for the people who are severely resistant to weight loss. It's not to "speed up" the rate of your loss because you believe you are losing too slowly.

According to Dr. Atkins you can be severely metabolically resistant to weight loss for a number of reasons. But you have to rule out any weight loss "stallers" that can be reversed or alleviated.

Before considering doing the Fat Fast:

      1. Did you follow the book exactly during Induction and still didn't lose any weight?

In other words, did you only eat what was listed on the Induction Acceptable Foods list, followed the rules of Induction, exercised, took your vitamin supplements, etc. ? If you didn't do any or all of these things, your lack of weight loss might not be due to metabolic resistance to weight loss at all and you should really consider doing the diet properly before considering to do the Fat Fast.

      2. Did you go to your doctor to have tests done for the following: hyperinsulinism, thyroid problems, and yeast overgrowth?

If any of these things apply to you, then your doctor should be able to give you treatments to help you with these problems and once these problems are solved your weight loss, typically, will improve.

      3. Are you on any medications that can interfere with your weight loss?

Dr. Atkins cites anti-arthritis medications, steroids, hormones (birth control pills, HRTs), anti-depressants, diuretics and beta-blockers as some of the medications that can interfere with weight loss. If you are on any of these medications, you should sit down with your doctor and try to figure out if any alternatives can be given to you instead.

If you have gone through this list and have ruled out these things with your doctor, then Fat Fast might be an option for you.

Fat Fast isn't for you if:

      1. You "cheated" through your Induction phase by not strictly following the Rules and/or eating foods not on the Acceptable Foods List or not in the quantities allowed during Induction. Those "sneaks", "cheats", and "one bites" can severely derail weight loss in some people.

      2. You are losing weight and want to "break a stall".

      3. You want to "speed up your metabolism" to lose weight faster.

      4. You want to lose weight faster.

If you have lost 6 pounds you are doing great and I don't see any reason to do any kind of fast. Just keep eating healthy and exercizing. You are on your way!

When to Do the Fat Fast

Let me make it clear that the Fat Fast is actually dangerous for anyone who is not metabolically resistant. For people who lose weight fairly easily, the rate of weight loss is too rapid to be safe. But it carries very little risk for people who can barely lose on any other regimen. The reason why I ask such people to try the Fat Fast is to let them know that it is possible to lose weight.

"weight loss is too rapid to be safe" Hmmm, this sounds tempting actually. Who here has done this and with what result?

I've been on this board for almost 2 years and I have yet to see a post about how somebody used the fat fast successfully. I've seen messages about how it made people sick...about how they did lose some weight but it came back fairly quickly.
I'm not sure why someone would think that playing a dangerous game with their health would be tempting.

What I AM sure about is that I want the newbies to know that this isn't something they need to be worried about unless they find that they are truly metabolically resistant to weight loss and actually experience a true stall as defined in Meg's article on the fat fast.

Matt has started a thread on this in Main, which is a much more appropriate forum for this topic.

                    Re: Fat Fast anyone?

I tried the fat fast before I found this board. It is so not worth it. I felt horrible the whole time I was doing it, and I managed to do it for 2 weeks. Yeah I lost weight, but I felt like smelly excrement. Finally it got on my nerves enough that I went on a binge. So yeah you may be tempted, but really, in the long run you get a lot better results following the book and staying away from the fat fast.

                            I'm no expert but...

Firstly, before trying anything like the 'Fat fast' you should read what Dr. Atkins wrote about it himself. To lose 6lb in 11 days is great and this shows that you are not metabolically resistant. If you are not metabolically resistant the 'Fat Fast' can be very dangerous.

Get yourself a copy of 'Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution' and follow it to the letter - although by your loss it sounds like you already are.

Don't get so consumed with quick weight loss. It didn't come on over night it will not come off overnight. Every step you take gets you closer to the goal.. In this world of standing in front of the microwave hollering "hurry it up"- we sometimes lose sight of what is realistic.

Remember that to truly make changes in your life it will take time. Don't do something temporary thinking that it will solve whatever problem you think you may have. It's permanent changes that do us "RIGHT" in the long run.

You're doing good. Keep up the steady pace.
