  • Fat Amount?

I have not started Atkins yet but am considering it and just doing some research. I have tried sugarbusters and south beach but just have not been able to stick with them. I think they allow too much carbs for an addict like me. I need to get off sugar, etc completely. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome which includes insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), and I have high bp, high cholesterol/triglycerides, tachycardia and other health problems....way too many for a 27 year old.

Anyway, my question is this. I think the only way I will be able to make it through the first week or two is to have a lot of fat. I know Atkins allows fat but I could easily get in 100g of fat or more per day. Is this too much? I would have lots of dressing on my salad, butter on other veggies and meats, the max amount of cheese allowed per day and probably high fat meats as well.

Is this the wrong way to go into this? Do I have the wrong idea here? I notice in some threads that I have read that most people dont really have snacks and I was wondering why? Maybe after getting the sugar and bad carbs out of my system, I won't feel the need for snacks?

I have tried Atkins before but could never make it past the third day (always the worst for me). I would be rolling on the bed crying like an addict in withdrawal...horrible headaches, nausea, dizziness and cloudy-headed, very tired, etc. and would just give up. But, I am really determined to lose this weight and if I am going to do this, I want to do it right. Any suggestions or answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated. Also, everyone says if you can make past the first 3 days, it gets easier and you dont feel so bad after that...is this true? I was thinking if I started on a Friday, maybe by Monday I would feel better.

    TIA

    Re: Fat Amount?

    welcome back

You will be surprized when the appetite suppression side effect kicks in hpw little actual food you need to satisfy your hunger.
if you need that much to satisfy your hunger when you are eating them go for it. Fat has a mouthfeel pleasure thing thatyou will be activating and that too will suppress your appetite. it also slows food release from the belly and slows digestion too.

Areyouon anydiabetic meds? if so you need to discuss this with them so you don't get your blod sugar too low when you do Atkins.

So what you doing for the exercise opart of your Atkins?

      Re: Fat Amount?

Hello and welcome to Atkins!!! Just a tip, but please make sure you measure all your foods. I saw you said 'lot of dressing on my salads', and I just don't want you to stall or not lose because of not measuring. You can get past the Induciton flu, I had it pretty bad! Just take a hot bath, and you will make it through!!! Good for you on taking control of your eating. I used to eat all day long, but on this WOL I hardly ever snack. I usually eat 3 meals a day and drink lots and lots of water. Keep us posted on your progress, we are all here for you!
What would we do without it?

      Mini-goal- 149 by June 1st. I can do it!!!

Ah yes, the joys of Induction Flu!It is VERY true that when your body finishes getting rid of the toxins and withdrawing from bad carbs/sugar/caffiene, you will feel much much better. Just keep telling yourself that it will pass and you'll be fine. If you are able to, take tylenol or ibuprofen to help you through it. On day 7 I was still feeling crappy, but I hung in there.
Read the stickys in this forum, especially the Fitday one. Fitday is a great tool that a lot of us use to keep track of where we are with our fat/protein/carb intake.

As 2big says make sure you talk to your doctor if you are on any meds. I'm on blood thinners and I've had to adjust my meds several times over the last two years, so be mindful of that sort of thing.

Sugar is a drug and eliminating it from your life requires DETOX. That's basically induction flu in a nutshell. The bad news: it can be rather intense, depending on your previous dependence level. The good news: ITS ONLY TEMPORARY. The bonus: YOU COME OUT OF IT FEELING BETTER THAN YOU EVER DREAMED POSSIBLE.

I totally agree with 2Big about the satisfying effects of eating fat. Your appetite will diminish once you eliminate the refined carbs (sugar/starch) and you will fill up quickly eating all that great FAT! Fat is your friend!

Best wishes to you and let us know how you're progressing!

          Cheering for you!
