  • Bran

Is it allowed to eat bran? Yes, they're cereals, but they are good if you don't want to get a constipation.
Of course, if you don't use more than 20 gram carbohydrates per day. Not even in second, third phase?

If you have a problem with constipation, look up flax seeds on the board.

I was just wondering about the bran. They're full with cellulose.

        Re: Bran

        Hi Mistics,

Rich gave you an alternative to bran if you have a constipation issue, Flax.

But to answer your question, the rule of thumb is this - if it's not on the Acceptable Food list, you can't have it.

So, since you're following Induction, no you can't have bran right now.

Bran shouldn't be added into your diet until you're in the last level of Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL).

Here's a link to post that provides a list of foods and how they're added back into your diet.

        Take care.

            Re: Bran

The fiber supplements Dr. Atkins allows in the book are flaxseed, psyllium husks and wheat bran. So, take your pick.

Just remember that these fibers are "bulk forming laxatives". They work by absorbing water in your gut and they expand. The expanded "bulk" stimulates your gut to move things along. Therefore drinking water is important. If you don't drink enough, these fibers won't expand and they'll stick together like cement, causing more constipation.

              Re: Bran

Uh-oh, I re-read your post....are you talking about a bran cereal (like the kind you eat in a bowl)? The bran Dr. Atkins recommended is the bran that is not a cereal.

                Re: Bran

I need to ask if you've read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002 (DANDR for short)?
Everything is laid out quite clearly in the book and you can look up things like constipation in the index.

By all means ask us questions, but remember that DANDR is a very handy resource and it's a necessity to have on hand when you're doing Atkins.
