  • Protein and "net carbs" - I'm confused!!!

Not that I was going to EAT it (I really wasn't!) ... but, I noticed an Atkins Advantage peanut butter granola bar. It had "4 net carbs" ... yet, the total carbohydrates were 12 g. There were NO sugar alcohols and only 4 grams fiber. The remaining carbs were listed as "protein" ... so ... how is this "net carbs" ... no sugars, no sugar alcohols and 12g total carbs - 4 grams fiber = 8 "net carbs" ... how does the protein factor into the "net carb" count??

And ... I have another question. Mozarella sticks (cheese sticks with a little bit of breading) ... total carbs = 7. fiber = 1 ... protein = 5 ... does the protein count into coming up with "net carbs" in this too?? Again, not that I'm eating them because I'm not but ... HOW does protein come into play when finding "good carbs"??

Thanks! I know I'll get good answers!

Net carbs has nothing to do with protein. Carbs MINUS fiber EQUALS net carbs, period. The Advantage bars may be mislabled; not all products that use sugar alcohols explicitly state it in the nutrition information. Look in the ingredient list instead.

    Mozarella sticks will have 6 grams net carbs. 7 - 1 = 6

Atkins subtracts things besides sugar alcohols too if I am not mistaken. I am like killer, just stick with what we know works...subtract only fiber and you can't go wrong!

It's been a while since I've read the info on the bars, but there used to be fine print that the bars contained glycerin and that it was subtracted from the carb count too.

Yeah, I saw that actually. But ... I'm just going to stay away from that altogether. Even though on the bottom it does say that they are appropriate for the induction phase, I just can't see where I need to spend that kind of money. I suppose, if I really need something sweet, a serving from the .72 cent box of sugar-free jello with some cream would go a lot further.
