  • I just chewed a chocolate, is this the end?

I'm on day 8 of induction and I just cheated ! I got a small chocolate chewed it, immediately came to my sense and spit it, but still probably swallowed a tiny bit. Can I continue induction as it didn't happened or is this going to ruin the whole ketosis process? I know that the body can trigger an insulin release even without actually swallowing the sugar, but if the insulin effect is to store fat, and burn carbs, will that matter as I hardly eat carbs so the body would have to burn fat anyway??

I guess you will be OK

You did well to spit it out.

    Keep up the good work.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Yes, this is the end. Your membership to ADBB has now been revoked. JUST KIDDING!!!! I think it's pretty amazing that you were able to spit it out. Good for you. Just pick up right where you left off. Nothing is 'ruined'. What you have to think about is why you popped that piece of chocolate into your mouth in the first place. What would you do differently next time to avoid the same thing happening? Also, what do you mean you "hardly eat carbs"? I hope you're following the rules of induction and eating those mandatory three cups of veggies per day!

Yes, congrats on coming to your senses, just in time.

Next time, you will be much more careful wont you?

If you are finding that you are still drawn to chocolates and such, you need to think about why. Were you hungry? Upset? Bored? Is it that time of the month? What made you do this to yourself?

You can continue Induction as if it never happened, the effect on you physically will be minimal BUT it's the effect on you mentally/emotionally that is the important thing here.

To avoid this happening in the future, think about what made you do it, learn from this, and move on. One suggestion I can make is that if you are craving something like that, get yourself a high fat/protein combo snack and eat that. Teach your body that if it is hungry, you will feed it proper food, but you won't be a slave to it's whims.

I'm curious...when you say you 'hardly eat carbs'...what does that mean? Much less than 20 a day?

That was a relief! By 'hardly eat carbs' I meant a bit less then the 20 per day. I do eat my veggies now (although I didn't do it at the begining [silly me]). I ate the chocolate because I was obsessed by the thought of it for a couple of days now. It was a real struggle, as I've been recalling all those times I'd binge eat with cakes, chocolates and muffins, and I was ready to blow it big time..I'm so scared now that I'll do it again and this time I won't spit it, but eat the whole box.

You have to re-educate your taste buds, and that will happen very quickly if you stick to plan. I can't eat cherry tomatoes these days - far too sweet.

Try other tastey things. When you get as far as nuts, roasted Macadamia nuts are absolutly wonderful.

Yesterday I was out cycling and after 18 miles was very hungry. I called into a supermarket and bought a small pack of smoked salmon - scoffed the lot outside in the car park. Folk must have thought me mad.

I 100% understand what you're feeling...I know the impulsive popping something into your mouth experience and hate the guilt that comes after. One thing which helps is to ask yourself if you want to live the rest of your life as an out-of-control fat slob or if you want to show yourself that you can control things. The beauty of this way of eating is that it returns your self-control. Bite yourself, kick and scream...but give your body at least 5 days to get in control. I've done induction before where I had those feelings you're having and they wouldn't go away...finally I realized the reason was because of all my low-carb snacks...the Atkins bars and Carbolites. So check out what you're eating and see if there is a snag. Drink lots of water and breathe...take a walk and calm your nerves. I know when cravings set off...there is a panic attack in the body.

Nervosia, thanks a lot for your post. It helps so much to know other people felt like that but managed to overcome it. I really hope I'll manage to go through induction this time and manage to stay on Atkins afterwards. The thing is that scales haven't changed since the 2 pounds I've lost, and my enthusiasm had sunk like titanic..

What are your stats? what is a typical menu? Do you put your food into fitday.com so you can see what is going on?

I lost 1lb during my 2 week induction, and 8lbs since Jan 3rd when I started. I'm screaming along like a herd of turtles! However, I AM losing..I AM doing it right, and I feel GREAT! 8lbs on my small frame, is like 30lbs on my husband. The before picture below was taken in January of this year. No, I wasn't pregnant, I just couldn't zip those pants up I have lost just as many pant sizes as my husband, but he has lost 4 times the amount as me. So, that leads me back to my first questions..
                        I did it!!

Awe. It's okay. lol ... I have to say though that I am laughing at your post. But, only in a good way. It sounds like me. Where you say you have been obscessed with thinking about chocolate for days now. That's me!!!! I too am really trying this time around. And where today - day 4 - is over (except for my nightime water) ... I am looking forward to day 5! But ... each day is just another day of decision making and ... well, this is a HUGE deal in the way of retraining our bodies in what it once lived on and thrived on and now taking that away and ... well, it's just a readjustment. We'll get there - really. we have to!! Summer's coming ... hot outfits and sexy shoes!!!! lol Good for you for coming here though. I love reading stuff that makes me feel better about how I think too! I'm with ya though!
THIS TIME and for the LAST TIME, I will do this!!

You're highly welcome, Tedinka. I'm a sugar freak...I don't even really love meat or chicken or eggs. I do love seafood. I keep a funny poster on my laptop background...it is a thin girl with the words next to her "If It Tastes Good, It's Trying To Kill You". Sure, meat and chicken taste nice. But when I think of super yummy...I think Snickers bars and blueberry cheesecake desserts. So this poster helps keep me on track...because even though that line seems extreme and insane...it's totally true. It's trying to kill my joy, kill my sanity, kill any life I could have that is not totally consumed with thinking about more food. So start thinking of your sugars as the enemy...because I truly believe they are. God didn't make a Snickers bar. Or an Atkins bar for that matter. Eat natural. And try to regain your life.

Re: I just chewed a chocolate, is this the end?

I am an Adkins yo-yo. Well, I used to be. I would go FULLY no carb for a week and lose 12-14 lbs and feel better. Now that I went a bit over what 14 lbs would correct, I have taken a different attitude.

The other times, I 'cheated' as you have. Don't worry about it. I would be surprised if it took you much out of ketosis, if at all. The main thing is to not let it happen much, if at all, and I express 'at all', but only you can control this. The sooner you realize the fact that the days of indulging on high sugar items are over, the better. You may try to rationalize it after you have lost a certain amount of weight, but you are just putting up a speed bump in the way of your progress. It takes a lot of determination to get to where you are and where you WILL GO, but you have to realize that sugar is not a part of your new lifestyle.

Believe me...I KNOW THIS IS EASIER SAID THAN DONE!

Please hang in there. It is for the better!
