  • Xenical, Xenical, Xenical...what hast thou done?

Ok. I'm beginning to suspect that my past foray into Xenical territory might have something to do with why I am retaining strange amounts of fluid in my abdomen.

As most of you know...Xenical blocks fat storage and takes it right out of the body. 30% of it anyway. I lost 2lbs and gained them back. Even though I stopped Xenical over 2 months ago...I seem to be experiencing the bloating, minor abdominal pain, and diarrhea of Xenical...and I think it is related to the high fat content of the Atkins diet.

Has anyone here sampled Xenical and is it affecting your Atkins Induction in any way?

I'm hoping that as I'm able to add more veggies, these symptoms will die down...

After 2 months, you shouldn't be suffering any direct side-effects from Xenical.

What could be happening, which is quite possible when taking Xenical, is that you've got a deficiency in fat-soluble vitamins, namely A, D, E, and K. Xenical doesn't block fat-storage, it blocks fat-absorbtion. So if Xenical blocks 30% fat (it's more like 25% max), you can expact that that much fat-soluble vitamins are also being blocked.

Standard vita-nutrient supplementation as indicated in DANDR should fix it.

Ok...storage, absorption...I realize it shouldn't be affecting me 2 months after stopping, however I've noticed from visiting many Xenical websites that several people have complained of this latent effect of taking Xenical. That they're being affected by it even after stopping the medicine. Long term research hasn't been thorough at this point. Plus I took a one month dosage over the course of 2 months - which might explain the small weight loss. I'm taking plenty of vitamins minus the iron...but I'm having this side effect that no Atkins dieters appear to be reporting. I've even had lab tests done for liver function and blood count, etc. Everything checks out to be normal...my pH was 6.0, though...but I guess that's to be expected on an Atkins diet.

So nobody else has tried out Xenical and found it to affect their Atkins?

I'm going to get an ultrasound done today...because this abdominal fluid retention just feels strange and unnatural.

Is Xenical prescription? If so, I'm not sure why you were taking it at your weight/height. That's a medication generally used with the extremely obese, but you're only thirty pounds above your goal. I'm not surprised there have been weird side effects. Let us know how your dr's appt went.

Killerbombshell...Yeah. I guess it's one reason they can't be sued - I'm not the appropriate weight for prescription weight loss drugs. I guess sometimes I feel overly desperate for a solution. After the weird side effects, I've stopped taking it...

So...the doctor checked me and couldn't tell me what was wrong. He said he is not detecting anything wrong. He also tried to tell me that there is no significant fluid retention in my abdomen. (I did not mention Xenical or Atkins diet to the doctor for reasons I can't explain...but I did tell him I'm eating mostly meat these days and no rice or bread or pasta). He said that he believes this might all be because of my dietary changes...and that it will subside. He might be right...because the fluid thing has either improved or I've learned to live with it so well that I'm not noticing it as much.
