  • A Few Questions

I am not sure where i read it here, but i did read somewhere that we should take a multivitamin with no iron in it. Why no iron. Mine has iron in it and i really don't want to stop taking it and i really dont want to have to go and get another bottle of vitamins. I did order the book but it has not come in yet, so i am not sure if this would be answered in it.

Also, It has been a week now for me, today is day 8 and i have lost 6.5 lbs in total. I was doing better in the beginning of the week and the last few days, things have been slowing down. Saturday my weight was 170.5, sunday it was 171 and today it is 170.5 again. So i actually gained a half pound on Sunday. Is this normal?

That is all for now. Good luck to all!

He says no iron in your multivitamin because with all the meat poultry, eggs, and fish we are eating...we are already overdosing on our iron intake. It's not good for the body to have even more of it. Meats are seriously high in iron...you didn't know?

Dr. Atkins suggests that you put that scale away for the first 14 days. I have mine locked in my neighbors trunk. Your weight will naturally flucuate from day to day which is why you are NOT SUPPOSED to weigh daily. The book, when it arrives will explain this better for you. I suggest you lock it up, out of site.

As for the vitamins...I am really not sure...some of the more experienced Atkiners will surely help you out.

          Re: A Few Questions

i knew they had iron in them, but did not think it would be that high where we would have a problem with multivitamins with iron. Ok then. thanks so much. I really need that book to come in.

The only reason why i weigh myself everyday is because i got that downloadable carb counter on some atkins website and it asks for daily weights. Oh well. No real biggie i guess, i will not weigh myself until next week then. Thanks

            Re: A Few Questions

Atkins and the Eades' (Protein Power) and other low-carb experts do recommend finding a multivitamin without iron. (Unless you're truly clinically anemic - not as common as you might expect.) Especially if you're male. Humans don't have a way to excrete iron except by bleeding - which women do every month, of course. Excess iron is stored in the body, including in the heart as ferritin. The buildup of iron in the heart muscle has been repeatedly linked to the severity of many heart attacks. This is one reason why women's heart attacks tend to be milder than men until a few years after menopause, when they catch up. (I think the Protein Power Lifeplan gives the best description of the chemical pathways of iron and iron storage problems. Highly recommended reading, IMHO.)

One way to lower your stored iron is to donate blood regularly; it takes several sessions to achieve safer levels, apparently. The other good practice is not to take in excess iron in "enriched" bread products (no problem!) or multivitamins. That's one reason I'm staying with the Atkins Basic-3 for now until I find another one that gives me meaningful doses of the things I want without added iron.
