  • Marinades

I made this recipe today: http://thanksgiving.allrecipes.com/az/BakedHam.asp

I used diet cola instead of normal cola.

Can anyone give me any advice as to whether or not this recipe is acceptable? I wouldn't actually DRINK a soda, but I figured since most of it is just thrown out it might be acceptable. (Let's not discuss whether or not drinking diet soda is acceptable -- that argument can go on and on from what I've heard.)

It also made me wonder about other marinades. Since only a small amout is consumed, are marinades with little amouts of sugar acceptable?
A long time ago, I went from 317 to 234.
    Today, I'm starting over again...

    Re: Marinades

I don't think this would be bad, but make sure you don't get a ham cured with sugar. I can never find ham with no sugar!! The thing with marinades, they soak into the meat and you get more than you think, which is why we can't use marinades with sugar. You could make your own, and use a little splenda to sweeten it. You must read ingredients, not just carb counts on labels. Hope your ham turns out good!
What would we do without it?

      Re: Marinades

I think it's a slippery slope to add sugar to any recipe even as a marinade on any stage of Atkins. Typically marinades serve two purposes...to add flavour and/or to tenderize cuts of meat. In terms of flavouring, I suppose one could try sucralose instead of sugar. In terms of tenderizing, my understanding is sugar has nothing to do with that (it would be an acid such as vinegar, lemon juice etc). I guess try stuff out but do not use ingredients not on the acceptable food list for your level of Atkins.
