  • need advice on induction started 20th mar

hi all.... paul here from liverpool, england
glad to join and hopefully it will encourage me on and also offer good advice....

i've started my induction and don't really know anybody who has done atkins before and depending on what your read, you can be left with varying thoughts.

i will give an example of what i have been eating for the last couple of days and would appreciate your comments as to it being suitable or not for induction and how (if necessary) i need to change it to improve it....please note that i am in no way bored with this type of diet so i'm not looking for suggestions just for the sake of "try this...it tastes good".....but rather " no, that's not right...or do this also, it will further imrpove things".....
    ok....enough of that....

    DAY 1

BREAKFAST: 2 egg omelette containing 2 sliced up muchrooms, a 2 slices of red pepper and a little cheddar cheese.....fried in pure butter.

LUNCH: Poached salmon fillet with cup full of mixed lettuce and 2 tablespoons of full fat mayonaise

DINNER: Rump Steak pan fried in butter with muchrooms and pepper, served with mixed salad leaves

    DAY 2

BREAKFAST: 2 egg omelette containing 2 sliced up muchrooms, a 2 slices of red pepper and a 2 rashers pf bacon. all fired on butter.

LUNCH: Poached salmon fillet with cup full of mixed lettuce and 2 tablespoons of full fat mayonaise

DINNER: 2 lamb chops pan fired in butter with 2 sliced mushrooms, 1 slice of red pepper, 1 slice of green pepper and some mixed salad leaves.

    DAY 3

BREAKFAST: 2 egg ommelette pan fried in butter containing 2 sliced mushrooms and 2 rashers of bacon and 2 tablespoons of grated mature cheddar cheese.

LUNCH: grilled breast of chicken with cup full of mixed salad and tablespoon full of cheddar cheese

Basically, i've been eating nothing else and my only drinks are water...although i am drinking lots of it!
So long as the general opinion is that this type of menu diet is good, i'm happy to continue it but substituting salmon for tuna, beef for pork, etc

So... what is the general opinion?

also, i read you can each "liberal" amounts of meat, poultry, etc..... just how "liberal" is liberal?... i mean.... steak is prob 6oz..... full single breast of chicken? are these ok?

    Hello Paul!

Wow it looks like you are on to a great start. I like your menu and seems you are doing fine. I see that you eat a cup full of salad at lunch and dinner. You can still add one more cupful of "other" veggies such as these:

    artichoke
    celery root
    pumpkin
    artichoke hearts
    rhubarb
    asparagus
    chard
    sauerkraut
    bamboo shoots
    collard greens
    scallions
    dandelion
    snow peas
    bean sprouts
    dandelion greens
    spaghetti squash
    beet greens
    eggplant
    spinach
    broccoli
    hearts of palm
    string or wax beans
    broccoli rabe
    kale
    summer squash
    brussels
    kohlrabi
    tomato
    bean sprouts
    leeks
    turnips
    cabbage
    okra
    water chestnuts
    cauliflower
    onion
    zucchini

I don't personally over do it on the "meats" but you can be quite liberal. I just eat until I am full. That will come for you in the next few days, you won't believe how full you get and how cravings just END!

For some variety, look over these induction safe menus -- that way you won't get bored, even though you are not now...after 10 days or so...you just may be...so if you have some other creative ideas floating around you'll be less likely to cave into that deep inner child wanting a chocolate bar.

I had shis-ka-bob for dinner last night and it was fantastic! Be creative and have lots of fun! You are doing great!!

First of all, Welcome to ADBB!!!

      Wow! Your menus looks great!!!

The only things I can recommend it to be sure you measure out those veggies. They add up faster than you think! LOL. You won't have to measure for long though, b/c you will be REALLY good at eyeballing a cup in no time! LOL

Also, you are allowed 3-4 oz of full fat cheese daily. I am not sure how to measure it in teaspoons, though.

Liberal in this sence means their really is no limit of how much you can eat, like their is w/ cheese, just be sure that you are eating until satisfied, NOT full and stuffed.

If you don't mind eating the same things, more power to ya...just be sure your ratios are 65%fat/30%protein/ and 5% carbs (3 cups).
You can go to www.fitday.com an plug in all your foods for the day and it gives you the percentages. It's very helpful.

Also, if you always get your protein from the same exact sources every single day, you could develope an allery to that food...but hopefully someone can come along and tell you more about that one, I am not too sure of the whole story.

One last thing, do you own a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, the 2002 version? It is very helpful and very neccessary....although from the looks of things, you've got it memorized!!

      Hope this helps!

Hi Paul, welcome! Your menu looks fine to me. The only thing you may want to do is set yourself up with a fitday account, as you continue on. As long as you aren't going over the 3 cups of vegetables a day during induction, you're carbs will be fine. If you use onions, be careful though because if you aren't measuring they can creep up on you. But, usually 3 cups of veggies a day will keep your carbs very low. Great Job!

As far as the word "liberal" it means that you can eat until you are full. This is the time to listen to your body. If you are hungry, by all means eat. Some days I'll sit down and eat a 12 oz steak, some days only a couple bites will satisfy me. What you are trying to do is re-train yourself to only eat when you are hungry. As I progressed, I found that I am not as hungry. Some days if I get to six hours since the last time I ate, I force myself to eat an ounce of cheese or a little bit of meat...just to keep my blood sugar stable (as recommended by Dr. Atkins). But, once again, the key is listening to YOUR body.

Keep it up, you're doing great!

And I noticed it was your first post here too, so . . .
