Hi all! I know this is a REALLY BAD question to be asking so please forgive me in advance!! Im on day 3 of my 14 day of induction, and well tomorrow is my b-day and hubby put together a semi surprise barbque for me. Well its a potluck and he has assigned everyone to bring all the good ol' no nos! I was thinking I could eat a bite or 2 so I dont hurt anyones feelings, and of course there will be my favorate....beer!! I could fore go the cake, Ive never had the taste for sweets, but beer is another story! Do you think it would be better then nothing to spike my diet soda's with tequilla, so I feel in the festive mood? Has anyone screwed up this early in the diet? If so how bad were you set back? Ive lost 1 lb in 3 days, (I know I shouldnt weigh, but I just have too!!) Plus its the wonderful TOM, so this is not helping one bit with the lack of will power!!!!
Please be kind....I know its bad....but I wanted to be honest up front, and turning the big ol' 26 needs a tad bit of toasting!!
    Have a good day!!

Your body will use the alcohol for energy before it will use carbs, fats and proteins. But while your body is busy burning the booze, it is busy storing the carbs as fat, the fat as fat and the protein as carbs (which will be later stored as fat). So, you are only delaying the fat burning.

How much the carb binge will set you back is dependent on a number of things like how hard it will be for you to get back on track. Some people are very carb sensitive and 1 taste is the "kiss of death" for them. For others, it isn't hard for them to get back on track.

I am curious why your husband is sabotaging your weight loss effort by throwing a party that includes food you cannot eat and why you are allowing yourself to be sabotaged. Granted on the surface, it looks like a thoughtful thing to do, but if you think about it, it is really counterproductive to your weight loss effort.

If you are more worried about other peoples feelings than your own on your birthday you are doomed. This will be a great test for you. If you can get through this then the rest of your path will be much easier. It will be no one elses fault but your own if you get too "festive".

Regarding hubby, it has pretty much been my fault! I have not explained the diet I am on to a T. The last thing he knew that I was on Weight Watchers. Now its too late, and I cant turn this down, being a b-day gift is very special to me. I once had an ex husband ruin every bday I had, including sleeping with my ex best friend on my b day, while I was 3 months pregnant.
Knowing that, I think my hubby tries to make my birthdays now, as special as they can be. He knows I have a hard time with them!
Regarding jumping back on the wagon, I havent been craving carbs, one bit. The only problem Ive had is, being hungry and seeing a bag of chips, and thinking "how easy". But Ive been good! In fact as I type this, my 2 yr old daughter brought me a chip, and said "here mommy, yours!!" Then hubby just called and said, "Babe, I just bought you a dozen tamales, because I know how much you like em." I told em we could have em at the party, because I really shouldnt eat em, (well at least all of them!!) Thats what I get for mentioning the devil! lol Cant win for losing!!!!
He has always been Mr. Fit (He was a Firefighter in the Marines as of a yr ago.) Hes always been my cheerleader, in fact some times a pain about you shouldnt eat this, or that! I was always skinny until he got out and we moved 2 times to 2 different states, in a year. ( I seriously think thats the reason for my 30 lb gain!) Even after my 3 babies I never had trouble with weight! Darn those moves!!! It came on so quickly, I had the doctors concerned with thyroid, but that was negative!
Ill try to survive the rest of the day, maybe I should lock myself into a little room somewhere!!

No reason to hide, there are dozens of food that you can prepare or buy easily that will blend right into the rest of the pot luck. The last thing you want to do is associate this with bad things. Just make it your way of life. Take a quick peek at the food forums for ideas. Your birthday will not be special for you if you look back on it in another year and see it as the day you ate a bunch of carbs and never looked back.

The decision is yours to be made and no one elses. Your husband sounsd like a great guy. I bet if you sat and explained what you are doing and how he'd be very supportive. I got some flack from a few people when i started (only a few weeks ago) and I told them it was my health and my body-image and I loved them. So this woe is yours. if you eat and/or drink the things you shouldn't, move on and get back on track. Figure out your triggers, and learn to overcome them. I love beer. and wine. I was 99% cheat free for my first two weeks though because I reminded myself i was doing it for me. I can have a beer or glass of wine whenever i want. but it'll slow down my progress and i'll be disappointed. But that's just me. So reflect on you goals and so on since this is your birthday and today is always a good time to start fresh, and Happy Birthday

Is it to late to let the guest know that your diet has changed? I had a similar situation with a anniversary dinner at work. I still went out to dinner I just let everyone know about my new dietary needs and that the resturant will picked accordingly. I thought I would hear lots of grumbling and stuff but everyone was pretty cool about.
After all a BBQ means meat and lots of it

Thank you for that. The thing is i don't expect it to keep going at that rate. I've always been a stubborn loser. I lost 11 in the first week which i was thrilled about but the second week i lost 4, and i don't expect it to drop faster than that. i was packing the carbs in before I started and my "flu" definitely told the tale for me. There are some folks here that are doing amazingly well, but it's a continual process. i know you can do it. i normally don't stick to anything, but once i put my mind to it things just started happening. i'm working on an exercise regimen now. i found that orinting out the wallet sized food lists helps alot. I carry the book in my purse too, lol. i haven't needed to reference it as much as the days go by, but I like having it handy. You can do it.

                    Re: Devils Advocate

I know I shouldnt weigh, but I just have too!!

Please notice how we can speak to ourselves sometime. Notice how we willingly hand ourself a rope to hang
                    ourself with.

Here is the truth. We can do what we know is right for us and we never have to do anything that isn't right for us.

How we talk to ourselves is so important.

Be kind to yourself by standing up to neurotic
behaviors that may have undesireable consequences. Honestly, has all the scale watching kept you thin?
Given you any power over compulsive eating?
It certainly didn't do anything to help me.

Telling yourself over and over that you have no control
is so damaging for the esteem. And it is untrue. To celebrate your birthday and every day, I challenge you to change the way you speak to yourself.

Always affirm positive action and accept no excuses. This is your life - decorate that life with honesty, self-esteem, dedication, and positive action.

How about this? "I choose not to weigh until the end of my induction because I am not a scale slave. I know that my body will need some time to make metabolic changes and I'm totally willing to be patient while my body switches to an efficient fat burning machine."

I have some tough love for you.

No booze, no carbage, no "one bite", no cheating on a clean induction. It will knock you out of ketosis, and you will feel lousy about yourself.

If you don't take your health regimen seriously how can you expect anyone else to? Other people will never get what is at stake. Thats why you have to do what is right for you, even though it isn't easy at times. What looks like normal food to other people is poisen for the carb addict.

When you have been in ketosis for a couple of weeks it will no longer be hard to stick. Your cravings will diminish, your desire for healthy food will dominate. It won't always be hard.

There are simply NO excuses for cheating on induction. There are ample Atkins friendly foods you can eat at a birthday party including a low carb dessert.

With all the low carb recipes at our disposal, there is no exuse.

Don't tell yourself that stale old lie about "not wanting to hurt anyones feelings"....its ridiculous. You are a grown up. Grown ups stand up to other grown ups and declare what is right for them.

Since you are having a BBQ, which is great for Atkineers, have some Atkins friendly treats. Shrimp dipped in butter. Chops and steak and mushrooms.
Hamburgers and Hot Dogs. Slice up jicama and enjoy that instead of chips. Eat, eat, eat!!!!

Spaghetti Squash is a perfect pasta substitute. Make some stuffed mushrooms. Your guests will love to sample those. Make a sugar free cheesecake or pumpkin flan with some whipped cream.

If you are eating food like this in front of your guests are they going to believe anything is amiss with you anyway? And if they did, would it be any of their damn business?

How silly we can get when we think what we eat in front of other people matters to them anyway. Do we police what other people eat? I don't. Its their business and they have their own lives, their own bodies to take care of.

Give your friends some credit. I'm willing to bet they
would be delighted to support their friend Hailey in her health regimen if she would be proud of herself and ask them to. For all you know, they may even wish to join you.

No excuses. A birthday is a day to celebrate the progress you have made in the past year. Not a day to clog your systems with overprocessed fake food that will force your body to suffer, then shunt that carbage to fat stores. Whats to celebrate about that? WooHoo more fat stores????

Let this birthday be the birthday that you really make
a difference in your life and stuck to induction. Think about bragging to the ADBB about that birthday one year from now.

You are your best friend in the whole entire world. Protect your best friend. And have a HAPPY ATKINS SAFE BIRTHDAY!!!!

Tabekat~ Thank you for your post....I appreciate all of the time it took you! Wow! You really gave me a few wonderful ideas on food. What about celery and full fat ranch? Mmmmmm, Shrimp!! I just moved here from NV, the land of the never ending buffets, full of shrimp! Im extremely lucky in the sweet dept.! I could go the rest of my life without cake and not care! My son is deathly allergic to nuts, and eggs, so we normally dont have any sweets in our house.
I was also thinking about deviled eggs. Its funny, Ive always hated eggs, especially deviled, but during the last few days I have been loving them! The only problem of mine is the beer!! I honestly think thats where all this weight came from in the 1st place. When hubby was getting out of the Marines, it was one farewell party to another. Then BAM!! 30lbs in one month!! I didnt even barely eat that month! JUST BEER!! 1 year later I am still carrying around that Keg too!!

Happy Birthday, I agree with the above post, you need to celebrate what you have accomplished, not the carbage you could have ate. Just THINK of how amazing you are going to feel knowing you handled it with finesse.

Happy birthday. volunteer to be the DD for all your friends as your present to them then you can't drink and ahve to pass it up

Hand DH your DANDR and ask him to read it as a b-day present to you. there is a chapter in it about recruiting your family friends and even coworkers to be part of your Atkins support network.

Eat the food you can have on your induction and skip the others. you don't have to explain why unless you want to. SInce everybody is bringing food you can't be expected to eat everybodies dish. Remember be kind to yourself and true to your dietary needs celebrate your love and friendships you share with these peolpe not the food. life is full of events that have foods associated with them but Atkineers learn how to stay on plan and celebrater the true meaning of the life event.

                            Happy low carbing.
