  • Lost Motivation

    Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to this site but have been reading all your useful info and found it all very helpful. I am now on day 8 and into my second week but feel really disheartened, I decided to see how i was doing on the scales yesterday and after a week of being really good on the diet and not cheating was really let down to know that i had only lost 1 pound I thought I would have done a lot better than that as most people lose loads of weight and all I wanted to do was eat a big chocolate bar after feeling let down. I worked out four times last week too doing boxing, running, spinning etc and really worked hard do you reckon that maybe i have put on muscle which weighs more than fat which is why I have only lost a small amount or could there be another reason. My meals have been cheese, eggs, ham, tuna, small portions of salad according to the Atkins book, red meat, omelettes...I have been so good. The only one thing I did was have two diet cokes and vodkas at the weekend which have no carbs and a tiny splash of skimmed milk in my tea (hardly anything). I really do feel like giving up PLEASE HELP!!!

    Re: Lost Motivation

I really am new to this as well, and I sure one of the people on this board can give you advice to help. I just want to tell you to not give up. You are still losing weight. I know last time I did this (before I was pregnant) I went for about 2 weeks before losing and then suddenly *BOOM* the weight started to drop off. You never know how your body will react. But I really hope you will stick with it. I know you will not be sorry in the end.
    Good luck!

Did you measure your waist and hips and chest etc? If you did, you may find that you're losing some inches even if the scales don't budge. I know sometimes my scales don't move, but I'll have bought a pair of trousers a week before, no weight off, but they are lose!

Don't give up, it will happen!!!

        Re: Lost Motivation

Hi! It certainly COULD be muscle weight. We do have to watch how much cheese we eat, in my opinion. Too much is not good. Vodka is a no no on induction and so is Diet Coke and that milk. (Sometimes I have a CAFFEINE FREE diet Coke and it hasn't effected my weight loss, but I won't drink it on induction).

Also, depending on how much weight you have to lose, 1 pound could be very good for you. Generally, I find that the the less you have to lose, the slower it comes off.

I'm sure someone else will come along with more info for you. You're doing great. Keep going and don't give up. That's where a lot of us make mistakes...we give up. Then we find we have lots more weight to lose when we finally get disgusted with ourselves again!

That Vokda and Diet Coke was the problem. Your body will burn the alcohol before fat as fuel. In order for this way of life to work, you must follow the rules. I am sorry if that seems harsh, but it is true. You must get your carbs from fresh veggies, and just because something says 'no carbs' doesn't always mean you can have it. You have to leave alcohol for OWL, and even then it will cause your weight loss to slow down.
Take this next week, and do a CLEAN Induction (booze is cheating on Induction) and follow the food guidelines and you will be very happy. Please don't give up, you are worth is and you deserve to be healthy and happy.
What would we do without it?

Certainly if you're exercising a lot, you sure could be building muscles. The tape measure is really your best friend as numbers on the scale don't always give us a true picture of what's going on. Do yourself a favour, do induction clean! No alcohol or milk no matter how little the amount. OWL is just around the corner where you can re-introduce those foods.

              Re: Lost Motivation

Thanks everyone, I didn't realise the Vodka and Coke was a no-no on the first two weeks, i have the book that outlines what has carbs and what doesn't and because i read that it has no carbs i thought it would be ok - ooppss tea is so yucky without milk but I will give it a go, drinking green tea at the moment so that's a lot better for you. It's my birthday celebrations at the weekend so it's gonna be very very tough, am still sticking to it though even though I did want to cry in frustration after weighing myself and then eat as much chocolate in depression

My trousers are a bit looser so maybe I should go by the inches, will buy a tape measure and see how I get on, thanks loads for the encouragement, I love this site it really does help you. Is processed ham ok or should i cut out that too? I will try and cut down the cheese intake aswell.

              Thanks a lot.

                Hi Kells
It looks as if you need to read and print out the list of allowed foods for induction to make sure you are only eating from that list no matter what amount of carbs in any food.

For any processed foods you need to read the list of actual ingredients as well as the carb counts to make sure they dont contain any 'illegal' ingredients.

Here is a link to that list in the 'FAQ' forum here.
                http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6781

There is another FAQ with the rules for induction which you need to read and follow too.
                http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6782

BTW the book we follow here is Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution published in 2002 (DANDR 2002) which is available most places -even in charity shops (thrift shops?) at a very cheap price if your budget is tight.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

A good point. What is the purpose of getting on the scale in the first place if you are going to use that number against yourself this way?

Please, for your own well being, stay off the scale.

Notice how you used this self-destructive ritual as a reason to undo your good works....and its irrational because the scale cannot measure metabolic processes nor tell you anything about whats happening with your body.

Nobody loses weight at the same pace. For some people it takes longer to go into ketosis. That doesn't mean it isn't working. All Atkineers need to cultivate patience.

Please read all the stickys at the top of this forum.

You can lose entire sizes on Atkins and never see scale movement at all.

Your tape measure and how your clothing fits is a far better measure of your success.

Please post your physical stats. It helps the volunteers know how to advise you. Get back on induction with your next bite, no more chocolate. Have patience and don't compare yourself to others.

Without expectations, wouldn't you have rejoiced at losing 1 pound. 1 pound! Its not a small thing.

                    Re: Lost Motivation

There are many reasons that may have effected your weight loss. The large weight loss seen mostly in the first 2 weeks of induction is mostly water weight. You may be still retaining water. Also as the others said muscle could have increased etc...

Measure yourself and calculate your body fat percentage. Check to see if you are losing the fat that you want too.

                      Hello Kells

Do not give up, your situation seems exactly like mine 5 weeks ago, I started on induction, was going excercise, in gym every single day for 2 hours and also using weights. I was really dissapointed and decided to stop everything, but with the encouragment from ADBB I continued. I then realised that my vegetable intake was high and the were carb creeping up from vegetables that i did not realise. Check the induction list there are some vegetables that are limited to only 1 cup.

Try using Fit-Day http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/Index.html to keep record of your food and count of your carb.

Good luck and keep it up
