  • question about frozen dinners

ok, maybe this has been asked before, but i couldnt find anything while searching.

anyways, do you think it is against induction rules to eat a frozen dinner such as Smart Ones? The meal i was thinking of having had chicken, broccoli, peppers, and some kind of sauce (cant remember the exact name). It had 210 calories total and 12 carbs total according to nutrition facts.

i know this is not freshly cooked food, but sometimes i get so busy with school and they are so quick and easy to make. Sometimes when i dont have food pre-made for the week, these meals keep me from really cheating on some carb binge. plus, i still count all the carbs and keep it under 20 for the day, with all other meals of the day being fresh veggies , etc.

so, should i give these up to be a "clean induction?" any advice? anyone ever try these once i a while? thanks for any help!

    Re: question about frozen dinners

Well, my advice is sort of yes and no. Check the ingredients on those: often times the sauces use different kinds of thickeners and other weird preservatives and should generally be avoided for induction. However, I have been known to pick up a couple South Beach frozen meals to have around for safekeeping (relatively carb friendly, of course). I would say wait until after induction unless you can find something with no additives, unless you're in an absolutely pinch.

Read the ingredients. Do all of the ingredients appear on the Induction Acceptable Foods list? If they do, then that food would be okay. But if it contains stuff like "modified corn starch", "dextrose", "wheat flour", etc. then no, it's not okay for Induction.

        Re: question about frozen dinners

You have to do what ya gotta do, but I think blowing 12 carbs on one overprocessed artifical meal with miniscule proportions and what is sure to be an outrageous amount of sodium, could be questioned.

It may satisfy your carb requirement, but does it satisfy your mind?

I have to take a lunch to work everyday myself. I cut up some fresh veggies, a pat of butter and put any kind of cooked meat on top. Fish, a chop, some tuna, some beef, whatever is at hand, put it all together in one plastic tub and nuke it. Its fast and easy and tastes great.

When I see others eating their crazy high carb drive-in food, or frozen dinners, I feel very happy to have a fresh and tasty meal.

Your original question reads - "anyways, do you think it is against induction rules to eat a frozen dinner such as Smart Ones?"

The Simple answer is yes, it is against the rules of induction, if the ingredients listed are not on the legal foods list!

              Re: question about frozen dinners

I think it would be unwise to eat these Smart Ones even in a pinch. Perhaps you could stock your fridge with cucumbers or cheese for pinch-type moments. The more natural, the better. And the sodium in frozen dinners is really horrible...as you're already trying to drink enough water just to flush out ketones and pollutants from your body. How much more water will you need for that level of sodium?

              Good luck.

                Re: question about frozen dinners

I do understand where you're coming from. It's not always convenient to stick to the rules of induction but where there's a will, there's a way. I used to just take in a can of tuna and a small plastic container with a spice and oil mixture for a meal and eat cheese chunks for snacks.

I found the key to a successful induction is portion control and staying away from processed foods. It hasn't been easy because I have a toddler and a pregnant wife to feed, but I was able to do it.

Keep up the good work and you'll reach your goal.
