  • Confused newbie

I have read the book and I understand most of it. I get the meat, the cheese, the condiments and stuff. I don't understand how much sour cream a person can have in a day (is it one ounce?) and the heavy cream is 3 oz., right? Oh, here is one I don't get. I understand that each packet of Splenda is one carb. But, how many in a can of soda? HELP!

right, right, and depending on the soda... check www.fitday.com Book says only diet soda sweetened with splenda (sucralose) is allowed on induction. (pp128-9).

Thanks! I like diet Pepsi 1 very much. I generally drink water all the time anyway, but every now and then I like a diet Pepsi 1. It is sweetened with Splenda, but the label says no carbs and I know that isn't right.

Woah woah woah, m'lady! Soda for induction is generally considered a BAD IDEA. Spend those two weeks detoxing yourself from all your addictions, and soda no matter how it's sweetened contains some of the wost toxins of them all. Many people here have worked hard to break addictions to soda and caffine; it's hard but it's worth it!!! (says the ex-coffee addict)

Also note that those sweeteners, especially in diet soda and even if it is Splenda, cause people to stall and are filled with sodium that will keep you from dumping water weight.

The soda that is generally appropriate for Atkins is Diet Rite, but again, not good for induction just on principle.

(Isn't it funny that an anti-soda post is my post number #666? Just a thought...)

I totally agree with Killerbombshell!! Say no to soda!!! LOL
You will lose so much quicker if you stick to water.

Oh, I didn't notice veggies when you said you understood most of it. Please eat your 3 cups veggies!!!! This is much more important than the soda.
What would we do without it?

              Re: Confused newbie

You know, I used to consume on occasions a soda at least once per hour; but when I read that you should avoid things that trigger cravings, and realized that I ALSO usually munched on frankensnacks with the sodas, I decided to back away. Still like the occasional one, but now find it less than appealing, and don't even finish (but I do still enjoy coffee).

As for the sodium, well that doesn't bother me - if you aren't just shedding water weight, it must be the fat! But I keep my mineral salts in balance as much as possible, as a sodium excess out of proportion to other critical electrolytes is not good. I supplement the others when have had too much NaCl.

                Re: cream

Heavy cream is listed twice: in the beverage section where it is limited to 2-3 tablespoons daily and in the Special category foods where it is limited to 3 (fluid) ounces.

Sour cream is listed in the Special Category foods, where it is limited to an ounces. An once of sour cream is roughly 2 tablespoons of it. Mind you, these are two tablespoons measured with a standard cooking measuring spoons (leveled off, not heaping).

Here's the tricky part. The Special Category foods are "special" because they have been known to stop or slow weight loss. So, it's not a great idea to eat the Special Category foods daily.

                The other thing is this:
an ounce of sour cream or three ounces of unsweetened heavy cream,
So if you choose to eat 1 ounce of sour cream today, you may not have 3 (fluid) ounces of unsweetened heavy cream today.

                  Re: Confused newbie

I think the key with the cream is count the carbs; Atkins writing may not be perfect. I doubt he meant for us to max out by including every extra choice allowed in the induction chapter in your daily menu.

At first I was tempted (like day 2 cravings) but then I put a potential day's consumption of such a compilation of food that was allowed, and came out with about 4000 calories and 40 g carbs... Not much chance of losing there.
According to USDA Nutrient database, http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ 1 T heavy cream is roughly 1/2 oz., and has slightly less carbs per measure than light cream. Fitday goes by the oz:
                  Heavy 0.831 g carbs; Light 1.1...
