  • Morning all, some queries some of you might be able to answer!

    hello all,

basically me and my girlfriend started atkins last monday (so we're about 6 days in now), and we've both lost some substantial weight (me 6lbs, her 8lbs), and basically we've got a few food concerns about things we 'should' be eating on induction.

firstly a few food stuffs, are the following okay?
    Sunflower oil
    Malt vinegar (made from maltose?)
low carb treats (these include a load of low carb atkins bars, and also low carb (high price) rolos.)
thing to point out about these rolos and bars, is that we havent been going overboard at all, in fact we've barely touched them. maybe one rolo a day, or a small piece of a bar.
Caffine Free Diet Coke (maybe 1 can/glass a day)
    Adsa Garlic sausage?

Secondly, we think we might have been having too much double cream (we have had it in scambled eggs and in our decaffinated coffee. (not a lot though, but over the 2-3 table spoons i reckon)

erm, i've probably got a load of other queries, but i'm at work and am thinking about other things at the moment!

    Thanks!

Low Carb bars and snacks are a big NoNo in induction, so is diet coke, it has aspartame and sodium in it. Only eat what is on the acceptable food list.
    Good luck with your journey.

Well, Aspartame is not allowed at all, we are only to have beverages sweetened with spenda. Me personally I only drink water... I used to have 4-7 cans of Mt Dew a day. I was hard to get off the pop but I feel soooo much better now without it.

to be honest though, it seems to be different for each person. I have drunk a fair amount of diet fizzy drinks and I have lost nearly a stone in the past week

Very True, but to actually do Atkins, you are not supposed to drink aspartame... True??

Yes I have had one diet pepsi everyday, which is really good compared to what I drank before and it hasn't bothered me. You could drink Diet Rite with splenda but my problem is we don't have it here, and I do drink all my water.

yeah, not sure what this Diet Rite stuff is, but we just seem to get crap in the supermarkets over here.

it was actually quite shocking and eye-opening to realise just how much sugar is in ALMOST everything you buy in supermarkets!

ASDA are doing (well they are in bolton, dunno about rest of uk), 2 bottles of flavoured spring water (sweetened with splenda)) for 1 english pound. (1.5Litres)
Flavours : sicillian Lemon, Raspberry, Mexican Lime, Cranberry, Mango+Passionfruit.

                sucralose is okay yes?

Re: Morning all, some queries some of you might be able to answer!

Sucralose is one of the acceptable sweeteners recommended - if you read the 'allowed food list' in DANDR (page 128 in my copy covers the 'artificial sweetener' section) you will also find most of the answers to your other questions.

As for your sausages - the best way to decide if any foods are allowed is to read the labels!!
Make sure everything in the ingredients list is also on the 'allowed foods' list before you buy/eat the contents.

Oh - and congratulationt to you and your gf on your losses so far!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Congratulations on your loss so far, you and your friend are doing excellent!!

Asparat...Big no no no, but I must say I think everyone tollerates different sweetners in different ways... I myself dont do very well with Splenda, but others do.

                    Goodluck on your journey!

Re: Morning all, some queries some of you might be able to answer!

I started out my first week of induction drinking about 4 cans of d.coke per day..knowing i had to kick this habit (it was worse than my smoking habit) i decided to buy diet coke w/ splenda.

i will admit the d.coke with splenda isn't exactly...the best...but what it has forced me to do is drink water with just about every food i consume. I only touch the d.coke with splenda every once in a while when i get a craving for diet coke.

but after just a week of kicking the regular diet coke, i honestly feel so much better with all the water cleaning out my system and the non-existant caffeine withdrawals. so that was a good process for me, you might want to look into it as well

best of luck and congrats on your losses!

We have Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda here....maybe you guys will get it in your area soon? Keep your eye open for it if you think you'll miss it that much. I don't care for it myself - I stick with iced decaf tea sweetened with Splenda, but I know some people who can't do without their sodas! LOL

Re: Morning all, some queries some of you might be able to answer!

                          Congrats on the good start.

I find it best to try to eat only food prepared from fresh, and certainly this applies to Induction.

I do enjoy sparkling mineral water (unsweetened or with a dsh of lime or lemon juice). The idea is to let your taste buds really TASTE again. After 7 months on it mine have really chenged, celery and carrots taste very sweet, as do many tomatoes.

Give yourself a chance and try to avoid any packaged stuff for the first few weeks, especially stuff like Atkins bars and lollies. The idea is to eliminate those from your diet, not look for substitutes.

thanks to you all for your encouraging words!

so the 1st week is gone, and thats how much we've lost, (i.e. no more since me 6lbs, her 8lbs)

breakfast this morning consisted of a lovely cheese, mushroom and bacon omlette(made by my girlfriend, well tasty!!!), of which i've got some to snack on throughout the day.

                            Dinner is consisting of:
                            Tuna Mayonnaise (hellmans olive-oil mayo),
                            bed of fresh spinach leaves,
a couple of pickled cucumber chunks,
                            Boiled Egg,
                            Bits of fresh buffalo mozzarella
                            drizzling of olive oil

Cant wait to get my taste buds into it!

bring on the next week, in which the gym and exercise shall be a regular contributor for both of us!

Congrats on your losses so far! It's really nice that you can do Atkins along with someone; that makes such a difference! Also way cool that the gym is going to be part of your new WOL... exercise is a big part of Atkins and is non negotiable.

Re diet, you've had lots of good advice... I'll just reiterate that the more you stick to natural foods the better. As regards sweetners, you can use Splenda (recommended), sucralose and, I believe, saccarin. There's also stevia if you can get hold of it.

Glad you found us! Keep going the way you're going and you'll be at goal before you realise it!
