    Hiya everyone,

I'm new here, i'm hoping to start the diet tomorrow but i have a few questions.. not sure if this is the right place to post them but i saw other questions on this forum.. hope somone can answer me..

-I've been on a low cal diet for about 5 weeks now, i made a sample menu on fitday and it seems as though i'll be having about 1750 cals a day.. will i put on weight?.. coz thats like a 500 cal increase to what i'm having now.

-Can i have sugar free chewing gum in the induction phase?

-Also, i only want to lose about 20lbs.. can someone tell me how long it will take me approximately..?

I plan to stay on Atkins till i lose the 20lbs then i'll go back to my low cal diet but i plan on cutting my carbs by half or more maybe.. what do you poeple think?

I hope someone can answer my questions.. Cheers..

    Re: Questions

nobody can give you a time line for your weight loss. your hard work and metabolism will determine how long it takes you to acheive goal weight.

Atkins is a perminate change in your way of eating not just a get to goal and stop program. I strongly urge you to read DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 edition known as DANDR around here.

you will learn that cals are not burned as efficiently eating high fat low cal as they are eating high carb low fat so we can consume more cals doing atkins and lose just as weel if not better then doing a low fat high carb plan.

Dr Atkins limits all sugar free stuff including artifical sweetner servings to 3 a day. if you choice to use yours for gum that is your decision.

you forgot to say what you are planing to do for the exerciuse part of your Atkins. we have many ongoing challenges you can join if you'd like to have some fun doing that madatory exercise part.
    Happy low carbing.

      Hi.

There are alot of mistakes people make when doing Atkins and one of them is gorging on food. So, really you should only be eating the amount of food needed to satisfy your hunger. So if 1 hard boiled egg and 1 ounce of cheese is enough to satisfy you for breakfast---that's all you should eat. If you get hungry between meals, you can eat a small, fat-protein snack. I emphasize small, because some folks interpret "snack" as another complete meal.

Your daily caloric needs change with whatever your activity level is. So on your more active days, your body will need more calories than on your lower active days. So, I don't pay too much attention to the calorie equations because unless you do the same exact thing every single day, you will have different energy requirements everyday.

-Can i have sugar free chewing gum in the induction phase?
If you choose to have gum, you need to count the carbs in the gum and you'll need to count each serving of that gum towards your daily 3 artificial sweetener allotments.

-Also, i only want to lose about 20lbs.. can someone tell me how long it will take me approximately..?
It's hard to predict how fast a person will lose weight because that depends on your metabolism, age, medical history, sex, and your activity level.

However, most of us can expect to lose 5-10% of the weight we need to lose during the first 14 days of this diet. In other words, a person with a 10 pound weight loss goal can expect to lose at least 1/2 to 1 pound and a person with a 100 pound weight loss goal can expect to lose at least 5 to 10 pounds.

But again, it depends on your metabolism and how well you follow the diet.

Well, here's the deal. If you go back to the diet that made you gain weight, you'll gain the weight back, no matter what.

There are 4 phases of the Atkins diet. The 3 weight loss phases are Induction, On Going Weight Loss, and Pre-Maintenance. The 4th phase is the Maintenance Phase.

Many people make the mistake of believing the entire Atkins diet is the Induction Phase. Induction lasts a minimum of 14 days. Dr. Atkins never intended it to be the only weight loss phase of the diet. On-Going Weight Loss Phase (or OWL) is the phase where you begin to add carbs back into your diet and where you learn your body's carbohydrate level. Pre-Maintenance Phase is where you learn how to eat for the Maintenance Phase. So if you do Atkins---the proper way---you will be eating relatively lower cal than you did when you began, and your carb intake will be about 40% of your total calories during Maintenance Phase.

Thanks for answering. I still have one question though.. We're supposed to be able to eat all the meat, fish, eggs...etc but for instance, eggs have carbs, do i count those carbs towards my daily allowence?

        cheers

          Re: Questions

Yes - you count the carbs in everything that goes into your mouth! About 0.6 carbs per medium egg if I remember correctly.

And cheese we are supposed to count one carb per ounce regardless of how many actual carbs are in it, and one carb per serving of sweetener too!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
