  • Question...

When you've met your carb requirement for the day and find yourself still hungry or wanting something more, what do you do?

I just finished day 12 of induction (everything is clean so far), but today for some reason I have felt hungry even after eating - and I haven't felt hungry at all until today. I looked through my DANDR book and can't find what I'm looking for...what to do about it? I've been very careful to spread my vegetables out to all three meals, had plenty of protein and am doing everything by the book...so why the hunger today? Or is it just mental?

I haven't done anything about it except drink more water, and even that hasn't helped. I didn't experience this in my first go 'round on Atkins. What's going on? Any suggestions on what to do when this happens? (I'm not going to eat anything this late, about to go to bed soon so sleep should cover the feeling, but if it happens again, what can I do?)

    Re: Question...

You could always have a piece of meat which is the only thing that is carb free. If you want to be a little more flexible, eat an egg. It is still very low in carbs and is better than being hungry.

It is possible that on this one particular day you may have had less fat. Unless you are logging in at fitday and tracking your food, it would be hard to tell. Tracking carbs is easy enough by just writing down your foods but the fat & protein ratios are a little harder. You probably already know that we aim for 65% fat in our daily intake. It could be that this day was a little lower maybe?? Or did you eat enough fat with your veggies so that your blood sugar remained steady?

Whatever it was, it was probably a rare thing judging from what you said. It is just important that you eat if you are hungry and don't deprive yourself. We all get a day here and there when we are more hungry. I personally think a carb or two over your limit of 20 is better than being hungry - have an egg or two!

      Re: Question...

Thanks Jennifer - I think it was the fat content of the day now that you mention it but I couldn't put my finger on it for anything yesterday. I have not been recording fats and admit that after giving Fitday a try, I gave up on searching for foods and trying to make sure I chose the right one for how I prepared a particular vegetable or meat dish...it was just a little time consuming for me, but I do keep a food journal and make notes about any changes going on. Today has been fine so I guess it was just a one day deal. I do tend to eat a lot of chicken breasts and fresh fish so the fat content could be getting a little too low some days.

Thanks for the heads up...I'll be more careful now. There's so much to keep up with that sometimes it's a little overwhelming but I'm not giving up. Tomorrow is day 14 and I've kept my induction clean. I've already decided to extend it so I can only learn more and do better! I'm still fired up, so that's a really good sign for me!

Good for you! It really is just a long learning process. Which is actually very good because that helps it fit into your life when you get to where you are just maintaining. By then, you will know so much that you will be less likely to put any of it back on!

If you find yourself hungry it is essential you eat more and keep yourself full all the time. Eat LIBERAL portions of meat, fish, eggs, 4 ounces of cheese and 3 cups of veggies. Stay full!
