  • eggs have carbs, do i count them?

I have been eating lots of eggs and apparently they have a carb. Do I count this 1 carb per egg or what? If so, I went over today.

Re: eggs have carbs, do i count them?

Just went back into fit day and put in l large egg and it came out l carb, the same as 2, so playing around I put in a dozen (12) and it is 9 carbs. Rather freaky. Guess I will rounding mine off to l carb per egg when I tally.

Generally speaking, a large egg = .6 grams of carb. Rounded up for simplicity and safety sake, it's 1.

If it has a carb count, you have to count it.

I would encourage you to use FitDay. I found it really easy to use and to keep track of what I eat. Sometimes I'm surprised at the carb counts, and it keeps me on track.

Eggs are your friends. Just keep eating them. If your carb count is somewhere around 20, you will be ok.

FitDay is what called my attention to the carb in the egg, actually the mayo, too. On my label of mayo it says no carb but FitDay says 1 gram. What do go with? This is a tad more confusing than I thought!

When in doubt err on the side of more carbs rather than less. Overestimating won't hurt as much as underestimating and then wondering why you have stalled.

I think Dr. A said to limit eggs to no more than 5 a day. I'm not sure why. Maybe to make sure we have a more balanced diet?

No more then 5 eggs a day is because of the high cholesterol in eggs.
and I only eat 2 medium eggs a day max so I dont really stress about counting them as carbs.

Re: eggs have carbs, do i count them?

There is actually no fixed limit to how many eggs you can eat a day - I know a while back there was a thread called 'how many eggs do you eat?' or similar that brought up some interesting answers!

The amount of cholesterol in an egg is I think one of those myths about fat eating that is still widely believed, but as very little of the cholesterol in our bodies is a result of what we eat I think it can be discounted.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I love this response to the cholesterol question:

One thing about Cholesterol you have to remember is your Genes. 2 years ago when I first did Atkins my doctor said to stop because my cholesterol was going to go up. I asked why?? He said that there is a lot of Chol. in the Red meat I eat. I said, so, if I eat high carbohydrates my cholesterol will go down? He said YES!!! So, I said, if cows eat grass all day, why is their so much Cholesterol in red meat???
                      His answer???..... SILENCE

Re: eggs have carbs, do i count them?

Fit day rounds up in the food listing but keeps a very accurate running total for the day using all those partial carbs.

We should never not count something cause it is low in carbs as it only takes being over our CCLL by 1 measly carb to stop weight loss and ifyou don't count say 5 iten=ms that had .6 net carbs you are already up to 3 for the day you didn't account for.

LOL Brook yep food sources of cholesterol don't digest their cholesterol they make their own if they are herbavoirs just like we do.

actuall cholesterol is our friend dispite all the bad press it gets.without cholesterol in our body we would be cell less puddles of goo. Every cell in the human body needs cholesterol for the membrane constuction. several hormones are created out of cholesterol too so don't fear it just learn to control your blood value.

Over 75% of the cholesterol in your body is self made. they didn't know that back when the bad press for cholesterol started so it was all blamed on the food you ate and eggs got nailed as a high cholesterol food. Newer measuring has pegged large eggs at 212 not the higher numbers it had back in the 80s. I'm sure many have seen the new ads for the cholesterol meds telling folk about the two sources of cholesterol the food and the relatives ( meaning genes).

Since doctors are supposed to take the path of least harm if you are high they will tell you to change your diet to lower the amount you get there and increase your exercise to create more good cholesterol and lower the bad cholesterol. For folk bordrline high that will do wonders for their high number so again diet gets the blamed if you were borderline high, but if you were 260 no way does food alone get you back to noral range as the total from the food you eat is about 65 points worth by itself and you can't eat nothing.

For a long time cholesterol was one number and off course it all had to come from meat cause plants don't have it hence the eat less meat less eggs less fat advice sprang up.
But surprize the low fats high carb diets actually didn't lower cholesterol so more research was done and it was discovered there are several components in the cholesterol LDL 2 known types, HDL, anf triglycerides too.
tryglycerides are fats but excess carbs are converted to fat too so they too cause triglycerides to go up

The Atkins diet uses the simple fact that in the absence of sugar the body will burn tryglycerides for fuel. Get the TG down the cholesterol goes down some. Then the meats we eat have HDL in them too as part of the cholesterol in them so our HDL will go up too. there are many foods on the Atkins acceptable foods for the first 2 phases that stimulate production of HDL too. Also the only way other them shedding skin cells to export LDL from the body is in bile not reapsorbs. eatting more fats increase the bile production in the liver and excreation into the small intestine to break down the fats in the diet.
Some will not be reabsorbed. We help that "some" get bigger by eating our higher fiber veggies as that fiber absorbs water and traps some of the fats and bile inside the fiber/water mass and out the back end it goes never to be used in the body again. that is how Oat bran and other soluble brans with the beta complex and psyllium work to lower cholesterol.

Then you toss in the mandatory exercise part of our Atkins which produces higher HDL which carries LDL back to the liver from the blood stream and you got high fat eating low carb folk with the bad going down and the good going up getting hesaltheir and healthier as they get smaller and smaller.

Some folk with those genes programmed without the feedback controls to stop production will need more then just normal Atkins eating dietary control to control our cholesterol LDL and possible TGs but if you have that your doc was on you for it way before you started Atkins.

Remember Dr Atkins tell us to rotate our protein sources so we don't become allergic to them so if you enjoy eggs skip a day and go eggless for that reason but not cause you fear the cholesterol in them

I tend to suspect that Dr. Atkins made a mention of not eating more than 5 eggs a day too because he wanted to teach healthy portions and moderation... it's that old lettuce argument... the one where you can't eat 14 cups of lettuce even though you have the carbs to do so on Induction... it's about self-control, and not binge-eating, I suspect...

I admit though, that I have eaten as many as 8 or 9 eggs in a single day on financially difficult weeks when eggs were my sole protein source, and I'm one of those whose cholesterol numbers have actually improved while on Atkins, so I believe every word of what 2big just said a couple posts up.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.
