  • My heart is racing!

Ok so I am in day three of indcution. The past few days I feel fine. This morning I had six deviled eggs and for lunch (which was about 1 hr ago) a quarter of dark meat. NOw my heart is racing. Its kind of difficult to breath. It is as if I just finish running a lap. Did I eat too much. I feel satisfied, but not stuffed. What could be causing my heart to race like this? Please help.

I havent had any caffeine and I didnt excercise yet today either.

The 3rd day? Congratulations - you have most likely lit your body furnace and are going into ketosis, aka burning your fat. You might not be drinking enough water, which could mean you're dehydrated, causing your heart to work harder trying to keep your blood pressure up. You should also be having some veggies, more fat, and supplements to keep your body supplied with enough vital nutrients.

        Re: My heart is racing!

Thank you for the response. My heart has calmed down alot and I am drinking alot more water.. I had 6 deviled eggs equaling 3 Full boiled eggs. They were split in half. Is this still excessive if they are deviled (mayo and seasoning)?

No, 3 eggs is ok (personally I think 6 is too, if your appetite is still that big) and the mayo is extra fat to go with all the protein in the chicken. You want 65% of your daily calories to be fat during induction, 30% protein and 5% carbs, strictly from the DANDR allowed induction foods list. You can play around with your menu to see the %'s at www.fitday.com.

Your appetite should diminish very soon, and energy increase. Glad you feel better. Also, when I start induction, I've found sipping bouillion to slow the rapid electrolyte & fluid loss that can occur and make you woosy.

It's also possible that you have a mild allergy or sensitivity to eggs...if you don't normally eat that many you could have mild symptoms that you don't normally notice, but after eating three, it would be more significant.

Short of breath is how I feel after I eat beef, wheat, tomatoes, or almonds...
but that's just my perspective because I'm allergic to all kinds of weird stuff.

Have you ever experienced anything like this before?

I have never experienced this before with eggs. But I am starting to think I overate... if there is such a thing on atkins. If I have a food allergy it would probably be the mayo in the deviled eggs. I normally hate mayo. but there delicious on atkins.

I'm not saying this is what you have but...

I have a tachycardia (racing heart) that is triggered by not drinking enough water, too much exercise, dehydration, not enough sleep, and being overstressed (which causes me to not eat). I know that if I do not hydrate while loosing weight and exercising I will most likley have an episode. Mine is also triggered by PMS and birth control pills. My Doctors all confirmed that an imbalance in electrolytes can be caused by not drinking enough fluids, going on a diet/rapid weight loss, exessive exercise w/o drinking enough fluids, and too much caffeine among other things. They were a little hesitant to admit that PMS and birth control pills also set it off until I wore a monitor during PMS and 2 weeks after birth control hormones were out of my system I stopped having episodes. It is hard to find what triggers these episodes-and you know your body better then anyone else. Hopefully this won't happen to you again. My Cardiologist told me that most episodes of a racing heart are not life threatening, however, if your heart goes too fast for too long it can be dangerous.

You should see a doctor, go to the ER if your heart does this again. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water and avoiding all caffeine.

                  Re: My heart is racing!

I've got 2 more cents for you, though you/your doctor will have to decide if it might be a good idea for you...

There's a number of products in the category "artificial ocean" which are produced for salt-water aquarium life. They have the entire spectrum of salts and trace minerals in the ideal seawater proportions, without the toxins and pollutants found in real seawater. There is also epsom salts, which are magnesium sulphate crystals. A pinch or 2 of each dissolved in diluted bouillion has served me very well with the occasional added pottasium tablet.
On occasions without it, through mid 2005 until I started trying this, I've often suffered dizziness, cramps, mood swings and general malaise/weakness which could be attributed to dietary deficiencies, overindulgence in alcohol, and other things causing fluid imbalances. This works for me very quickly to solve the problem. I used it during induction and still do on any occasions of early symptoms from either overexertion or otherwise of those symptoms, and there have been no problems.
It's lots cheaper than other mineral/electrolyte supplements, and tastes good. Normal salt is only sodium chloride; and too much in proportion to other mineral salts can mess with you. But if you try it, start with small increments, especially the epsoms (can be a laxative), and be sure they're fully dissolved in cool to warm water before consumed. Cooking with it is ok but not as beneficial.
