  • Advice please

Ok, i just read about everything i possibly could about staying or not staying on induction. Silly me, I am on my 11th day of induction, lost 3.5 lbs my first week. i didnt measure any part of my body.... i also didnt read the book - since i started coming on this website, i have been reading like crazy, and i feel i am really not doing this "correct." not that i've cheater necessarily (i ate peanuts last week b/c i was confused with contradicting information) but i dont spread out my vegetables (I usually eat all in one sitting) nor do i count all percentages, etc.
Daily, I drink the correct amt. of water, drink 1 water bottle full of crystal light/day, I have coffee only once a week (1/2 reg & 1/2 decaf), and have dranken d.coke with splenda (2L bottle in 1 1/2 weeks). To me, it feels wrong. Yesturday I was not very hungary, so I didnt force myself to eat - no breakfast, had 8 oz. Chipped steak for lunch & tuna steak & broccali for dinner - that's all i ate yesturday & i know that was not enough. Since my Induction is coming to an end, i feel i should just start my induction over - I do eat processed foods (bacon, sausage & peperoni, but thats it) - to me, its really all the "meat" i like, besides chicken, some steak, tuna & crab. Did i totally blow this? I guess what i am saying is i want to do a clean induction (following all the rulers b/c i've now read the book and am more knowledgeable), is that ok even after i've done this indution? When i read the "sticky" pertaining to this, it said, peopel who have over 75 lbs benefit from extended induction, but i only want to lose 50 --- its just o feel i didnt do it 100% correct the first time (sorry, i am a perfectionist & need to do everything correctly )... what do you think?

thanks for your help in advance!

I'm totally with you Courtney. Although I dont have the book yet, after reading threads and posts on here yesterday and today, I feel as if I havent done a clean induction even though I havent had anything that might be considered cheating.

I realize that like you I havent been spreading my veggies out through out the whole day. I kind of feel like starting over tomorrow and following the rules Ive found on here a little more closely (including measuring myself).

      Re: Advice please

actually the point of 14 day induction was to one WOW you with how much you could lose eating Atkins style, two get you into ketosis and 3 get you unaddicted to any foods or chems you had to give up as part of your Atkins. since you are doing everything just keep on going. Even if you rtedo it now you will not have the glycogen stores in your body to lose the large initial weight loss the next time through as folk do on their virgin induction.

In chapter 13 of DANDR are 4 questions you will need to ask and answer for yourself this will tell you if you are ready to move to OWL or do an extended induction.

Make the correction of spreading your veggies out now. read the OWL stickies so you can make an infored choice and since your book hasn;t arrived try going to the library and reading a copy.

      Happy low carbing.

thanks for your help in advance!
        hi and welcome.

About measuring yourself. Go ahead and take your measurements now. You might also feel that your clothing is fitting looser.

Nuts aren't allowed during the 14 day Induction. Some people stay on Induction and add them in, but nuts are something you want to be very, very, very careful about because they give quite a number of people weight loss problems.

Spreading our your vegetables will help prevent blood sugar spikes. Part of the weight loss behind Atkins depends on keeping your blood sugar level. Moreover, vegetables contain fiber. The fiber helps to fill you up so you'll have less of a tendency to over-eat. Yes, it's very possible to over-eat your legal foods.

The percentages are a tool for people who have been used to eating low fat or calorie counting. It doesn't take much added fat to make a meal high fat: you only need about a tablespoon of added fat to your meals and that can be easily accomplished with an ounce of cheese or a tablespoon of dressing on your vegetables.

Water: the only thing that counts as water is water, according to Dr. Atkins. And we need to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily. Sweetened drinks are okay in addition to your minimum 64 ounces of water. But sweeteners are limited to 3 servings per day. So, check the nutritional info on the labels and see what the manufacturer calls a "serving".

The processed foods contain high amounts of sodium, not to mention preservatives and other chemicals. The sodium causes water retention in some folks, so they might not see any weight loss results because they are retaining water. Many processed foods contain added sugar as well. It's usually labelled as "dextrose" or "corn syrup solids". Because these products contain sugar, you need to be mindful of the serving size. The nutritional info on any label is only accurate for the serving size listed. Furthermore the US has really bad labelling laws for carbs. So if a product contains sugar in the ingredients but the nutritional label says "0" carbs for a serving size of 2 pieces, eating double or quadruple the amount will require you to account for those carbs.

There's really no way to "do Induction over" again. Sure you can stay on it, but the results you got from the first time you did it should be what you use to figure out your degree of metabolic resistance.

The people who also benefit from extending their Induction phase are the folks with severe metabolic resistance to weight loss and/or have medical issues that can hamper weight loss, like thyroid disease, chronic steroid use (like asthmatics), and those on some forms of heart medications. The majrity of us are not severely metabolically resistant and restricting themselves to Induction Phase is an unnecessary exercise.

haha yes, that exactly how i feel.. but should i even wait until Tuesday when its been 14 days of my first induction? Like i said, i started this new way of eating with other people telling me how they did it, not necessarily the total Dr. Atkins way - but once i found this site, im like (sorry for my french) ****. im glad im not the only one! i need to measure myself too b/c if the scale doesnt read me anything good, i am sure i will be discouraged.

megs, wow, thanks so much for taking the time to provide such useful information. I just want to make sure that I am doing this right -- i want to get the best out of my experience! I suppose will stay on induction for another week or so and really try to do a total 'clean induction,' unless someone specified otherwise..... again, i appreciate the response.

What about the whole like "im not hungary" thing - If im not hungary and am only eating two big meals a day with no snacks but water, is that ok?

Guess we are all apt to make one kind of mistake or another. But the two others who posted on your thread actually gave some good advice and I can understand or see where they are coming from.
Guess at this stage I cant really "redo" the induction, but just keep on plugging away at it, correcting any of the mistakes I have made thus far.

As far as the book goes, I have been to the library here and they actually didnt have it. I live in a VERY small, backwoods Louisiana town...but the library I went to was the military one on post...and they didnt have it. Not sure if its out or what, They only had two Atkins books which didnt give me much of anything....one was about changing your lifestyle for good but it dealt with people and what they do AFTER for maintenance...and the other was a cookbook *shrug*. I'll just keep doing my best until I get someplace that has a book store (yes thats right...we dont have a bookstore here...LOL).

Thanks for the advice and support. I will definately review those chapters & have already started spreading out my veggies! - i'm not going to start over, im just going to continue - each week (well, this is only my second) but after the first & reading all the informtion online, i have defiantely changed even what i ate the first week, so i will just change what i've eaten from the second to the third week... it can only get better, and I'm lovin' it!

haha oh wow, no bookstore? you're in the boonies! honestly, in the beginning i thought i didnt need the book. I just took information from others i know who have had success from Atkins - but once i found this website, i was like "ut oh" im totally off haha. So i've revamped and changed much of what i did the first week. because i did lose a little during my first week, i must have been doing something right - but i feel i can only do better & change the way i was eating in the first week to better suite what it says in the book. i guess i am just kind of getting down on myself for now doing a total "clean induction," where i probably would have benefited the most. but its over and done with and i can only move forward with the information i now know. and yes, i will get the book! since you just started, keep me posted on your progress

Loss of appetite is one of the benefits of this diet. So it's completely normal to not feel as hungry as before.

You need to follow the 6 hour rule---don't go more than 6 waking hours without eating something. I wouldn't advise skipping breakfast. Eat a small snack, like an ounce of cheese.

In that case a boiled egg, or a slice of ham spread with cream cheese and rolled up with a few cherry tomatoes.
You ought to have some fat, some protein and some carbs at each meal or snack to keep your blood sugars level.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

i am a perfectionist & need to do everything correctly

A perfectionist is just another word for masochist. No one is perfect and no one needs to be. Just sitting there breathing you are already as perfect as you ever need to be.

How you talk to yourself is so important. Please be kind to yourself and remember you are your own best friend.

Everyone makes mistakes while they are learning. I did induction 4 times before I nailed it. There is lots to learn doing Atkins, and I'm certainly not done yet. Let this new WOE be a profound journey for you.
