  • Being Sick and Atkins

Okay, well there is this really bad stomach virus going around here. My daughter caught it Wednesday night, I was home with her Thursday and Friday. Friday night, I started getting the symptoms. Lets just say that not only was I helping my poor boobala but I was in the restroom myself having issues with both ends. (Trying to be polite about it). So here is my thing.......what happens when someone gets sick like that? I mean, when you get like that you usually drink water, chicken broth, 7up...and you eat crackers or dry toast. If youre having stomach issues with the flu like that, there really isnt any way you can stay on the induction while you are sick is there?
I ate some pretzels (ran out of crackers), and drank water and a glass of 7up....I did eat a little cheese and later that night I was able to stomach a little chicken...
I guess I'm just curious how that works with the induction phase since there is NO way I could have stomached a salad or eggs or any more meat than what I did.
And should I feel guilty for having eaten some pretzels to calm my stomach down????

    Re: Being Sick and Atkins

I'm sorry - I don't have any answers to this, but I'd also be very interested to know. Like you I got stomach flu at the beginning of the year and the doctor told me to drink water, maybe some cordial to replace lost sugars (I was really shaking), and something like some plain biscuits (cookies)/dry bread, and also said NOT to eat any salad (not sure of the reasoning there...).

As you say, there would have been no way I could have brought myself to eat any eggs or meat, so I had some dry bread and biscuits with some blackcurrant cordial and soon felt much better. Strangely enough though my sense of smell was incredibly heightened for a few weeks after and a lot of foods made me nauseous that I'd normally love.
Also, a few days after the illness, I ate the best part of a punnet of strawberries and within an hour came out in the worst case of hives I've ever seen and this lasted for three unbearably itchy weeks!!! Since then I have tried strawberries and been fine though. Weird!!

Maybe some nuts could have been an option?

    Any ideas from the experts??

I would say--after your illness is over to restart induction.

I myself caught a sore throat, and horrible cough--and now have pink eye from my kids, all during induction--but I never went off program. I still ate normally, even though my throat was on fire and I felt terrible.

If I would have gone off though, I would restart induction as soon as I started feeling better.

Thanks, thats pretty much what I thought as well.......sort of a no way around it kind of thing. But I'm back to my regular induction type food now.

I was just curious how that works.........especially with something where you are to only have clear fluids and dry crackers or toast.
