  • How much Flax?

How much flax is allowed on induction per day?

I can't seem to find any place in the book that discusses flax. It is not included on acceptable food list so I am wondering....

As pineapple said, flax (linseeds in UK) is allowed as a solution of the constipation/diarhea(sp?) many new Atkineers suffer from under the rules of induction and as such should be introduced first as one tablespoonsworth and only increased if needed to 'regularise' bowel movements.
If you read the Rules of induciton you will find this
12.If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables.
and see Dr Atkins didnt envisage us making vast quantities of flax bread/muffins/buns/pancakes to eat instead of the bread and other white flour products we ate before Atkins, but did allow us to add a little bran or flax or psyllium husks to sort out' bathroom issues'.

If anyone loves to eat foods made using larger quantites of flax or bran then they need to wait till they have reached the relevant rung/level of OWL and then they can add 5 net carbs worth if they want. Flax/linseed would be 'legal' on the nuts & seeds rung and wheat bran on the grains rung in case you havent read that far in DANDR.

Yet another good reason for not hanging around on induction for too many weary months and getting bored with your food choices, but moving up the OWL carbohydrate ladder as instructed in DANDR.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

yep you start with one T and see how it works for you. I know I needed more during induction even eating the higher fiber other veggies. Once you get constipated in induction you keep the flax or psyllium so you don't keep getting constipated

Thanks for your responses, do you think it would be ok to have about 4-5 tablespoons of flax during induction? That seems to be the magic number for me to help w/ 'bathroom issues'... or would it be better to switch to physllum at this point???

If you need that amount then go ahead and use it.
Later in your Atkins journey when you are adding more veggie carbs on OWL you may find you dont need as much so can adjust accordingly.

                  Re: How much Flax?

There are several recipes that use flax in the recipes database accessed by clicking on the link at the top of the page called 'Recipes'
You can type in the word
                  flax
and see all the recipes that use it as an ingredient.
