  • Restart & 13yr old son

    Hello,
I pretty much stick with low carb for about 3years now . I have a 13yr old started back induction with me last week needless to say he has lost QUICKLY is there anything I should be worried about with him being a teen? HE does have more weight then me to lose and he isnt really going by the scale (even though I weigh him) he is going by the mirror and how his clothes fit.
    Thanks for any input.

What does his pediatrician say about his weight loss? And is his pediatrician monitoring it?

Children and teens have very different nutritional needs than adults. They are still growing and developing and anything that restricts their nutrition too much will haunt them in their later life.

      Thanks for your reply
He is bordering high blood pressure and recommended more exercise and eating better from his ped. He knows IM a fan of atkins suggested it for him he didnt have anything negative to say about it so I guess he is ok with it. I think vegies ,meat& cheese is better any day over McDonalds<LOL I figure the only food group right now he is missing is fruit and I know soon he will be eating that again ,I bought my son some of the low carb bread and he is still losing even though I know its not on induction he limits two slices per day. He drinks no soda lots of water and green tea .He also is taking a multivitamin.

You might want to read a book called Feed Your Kids Well, by Fred Pescatore, MD. According to the preface written by Dr. Atkins, the diet outlined in this book is the diet the Atkins Center used for children and adolescents. Dr. Pescatore was the Assistant Medical Director of the Atkins Center during the 1990s. That diet not as nutritionally restrictive as Atkins and is more nutritionally geared towards a growing and developing child. Atkins is an adult-type diet.

Since his doctor is okay with low carb for children and teens, you might want to suggest that book to him too. So that his other patients can benefit from a diet more suited towards children and teens than Atkins.
