  • Gross question

Absolutely love this forum. Warm, supportive, informative people. Sorry to ask gross questions right out of the gate. I have hyperinsulinemia. I am on day 13 of induction. In ketosis, lost 9 lbs. I have had diarrhea for almost 10 days and my urine smells absolutely horrible. No bad breath. Is this just part of the process? Why would this be? Physiologic explanation would be interesting.
    Thanks so much.

    Re: Gross question

First did you see your doc for the blood tests Dr Atkins recommends before you start Atkins so you know you are good to go with the Atkins way of eating?

the diarhea can be from your body not producing enough pile to break down the new to you dietary fat load. Use a fiber like psyllium to bulk up the stools and absorb some of the liquid which will slow the motility of the stuff.

Urine smells can be from the food you are eating like asperagus from the ketones or from you not processing the proteins.

    congrats on the 9 pounds

Thank you so much! I'm due for a checkup. I'll check with my physician and try the psyllium. I never ate vegetables before. I wonder if that could also be a factor, now that I am.

You are so right. My husband's company just pulled all medical benefits, so we are finding ourselves uninsured for the first time in our lives. Still, I'll have to get some lab work done. I'm still staying with Atkins. I feel so much better without the carb cravings and energy crashes. Thanks for the reminder to take care of myself.

Well, I've done induction a few times and yes, I find it is absolutely part of induction.
It's disgusting I know, but it does go away.
Actually, my last couple of times I haven't really had it and the difference was---
I stopped eating very hot (spicy) food.
I put chilli powder in a lot of things and I've stopped and now on induction, I don't get all the nasty stuff.

Thanks, that's good to know. I really love Atkins, I'm just concerned that my liver can't handle it. You look great and healthy. This is what I want for myself. Do you or anyone know if a one day liver cleanse would help my liver be more effective in breaking down the fat in my diet now. I don't know when I can get lab work. Last year's physical and labs were normal. I know we can't give medical advice, but Atkins is such a dramatic change from my high carb diet that I'm sure my liver was stressed as a result. Is Atkins less stressful for the liver than a high carb diet? Any imput would be great.

                Re: Gross question

liver stress? well it does have to make more bile to add your digestion, but it isn't really stressed any more then it would be by your sugar swings eating high carb cause once the stored carbs were used up the live would be busy making sugars.

                  Re: Gross question

I understand. That was very helpful. I guess I'm just trying to figure out why my liver may not be producing enough bile (if that's the case) to break down the
fats, or why my body may be having difficulty processing the proteins. I'm sure it just the adjustment to positive changes in my diet.

                    Re: Gross question

                    Yup, deffo is.
Your body is changing so you should expect the headache and the runs.
They both pass quickly though and it's an achievement in itself getting through them.
It all gets much, much better!!!

                        Re: Gross question

You're right! I start extended induction today. I don't know if 2 weeks is the magic number, but the gastrointestinal problems are subsiding. Still very absentminded and impatient/irritable. Side swiped a parked car (no major damage). Not myself. I have two little boys (3 & 4). If my mind and mood don't pick up soon, I will move to OWL instead of extended induction. Being a good mother is everything to me. Is there a magic number for the mental stuff?
