  • How do you keep from getting bored with the food?

    Hey all . . .

I am set to start the first phase - induction - on wednesday.

I love to cook, and can be very creative. However, I worry that I will really struggle with becoming bored with the food choices. I know that eggs aren't the only available source of food . . . however, you can only eat so many.

How do you all keep from becoming bored with your menu?

Set a goal of trying a new recipe every week. It usually makes 4-6 servings, so plan to eat 1/2 (not at a time, 2-3 meals likely) and freeze 1/2 so you'v egot something you can grab, and you don't get bored w/the SAME dish
What is it, a RACE? It's coming off, right????

In the beginning there will be days where it will seem like you are bored - especially when overcoming a carb addiction, but you keep eating healthy food, even if it seems you don't want it. Once ketosis sets in, it will alter your palate, cravings will diminish and you will no longer feel a desperate need for carbage.

No matter what, keep going and keep building those healthy habits. The day will come when you can walk down the junk food aisle and it will have no power over you at all.

STAY FULL!!! Never leave the house hungry or without healthy induction friendly snacks. Plenty of food to snack on beyond eggs. Pepperoni, cheese, jicama, olives, avacados, tuna, salmon, kippers, bacon,
peppers, turnips, sausage and cream cheese,
mushrooms, turkey, ham, etc. etc. etc.

Bored? Never. And I only eat eggs about once a week if that anymore.

Hang out in the recipe/cooking section and do an internet search for low carb recipes. You could make a differnet recipe everynight for year and never run out of new things to try!

Re: How do you keep from getting bored with the food?

Look at the Induction Acceptable Foods list.

Any meat is legal on Atkins. So you have your choice from ground beef to lobster to lamb chops to turkey. So if you don't eat pork, you don't have to eat it. If you don't eat beef, you don't have to eat it. There are plenty of animal proteins available for you to eat on Atkins.

There are 54 vegetables on the Acceptable Foods list from which to choose. 54. That's alot of vegetables, probably more kinds of vegetables than most people will eat in their entire lives.

With the exception of fresh cheeses, like cottage cheese, ricotta, etc., all aged cheeses are legal on Atkins. Soft aged cheeses like Brie are as legal as hard aged cheeses like Asiago.

There is so much variety on the Induction Acceptable Foods list that your meals should not be monotonous. And remember Induction is only 1 phase of the entire Atkins diet. It lasts a minimum of 14 days. Dr. Atkins devised his diet so that you can move on and begin adding more carbs and more food groups (nuts, fruits, legumes, grains) as you progress.

If you utilize the recipe forum, experiment with your own likes and dislikes, and plan your meals right...then you shouldn't have boring meals. I heard a phrase the other day that I liked....If your life is boring...then you are the one who makes it boring. I guess that could be also be said of our meals. (ha ha)

I had to retrain myself, as we all did, to really think about the foods I can eat now. I never thought it would 'be ok' to eat an omelette smothered in cheddar cheese and ham.. Add a T. of sour cream and 2 T. of salsa and "OH, YEAH!" If I'm really craving something I used to eat, like nachos or a taco salad, I go through the ingredients and weed out the high carb ingredients such as the tortilla chips. And who says you can't make beanless chili? All the flavor, none of the gas! My mom used to make 'lasanga' with everything but the pasta. Granted the tomato sauce probably had some carbs in it, it would still be a good recipe for lifetime maintenance. I found that my weakness, cheesecake, is easily turned into a low carb version with the help of splenda and using nuts as the crust, or just putting it in dessert bowls. I have a quick recipe for it i'll post in the recipe forum. I don't think it would be allowed on the 14 day induction, though.
