  • Does 0 carbs really mean 0 carbs?

O.K....Day 4 of Induction and doing o.k. except...
Bought turkey bacon...(0 carbs) on the package. Ate it for breakfast yesterday. Went to washed dishes a couple of hours later and realized that the drippings in the pan were "carmelized". Realizing that this doesn't happen unless there is some sort of sugars causing the carmelization process. Checked the ingredients...sure enough, sugar was listed. I was sooo bummed...I had unintentionally slipped out of a clean induction! First thing this morning, I used one of the ketone strips and it showed that I was still in "moderate" range. Well, I did it again....
Today I bought pork rinds as an impulse buy (particularly since I said I wasn't going to eat pork rinds on this induction). They were BBQ flavored. The package said "0 carbs". I ate a few and then said to myself "hummm...I have a "sweet" aftertaste in my mouth..how come? Sure enough, looked on the back of the package and sugar was listed as an ingredient! How could I possibly do this twice.
How can a package say NO CARBS and have sugar...is that even possible!
I will have to check my status with the ketone strips tomorrow morning!

It sucks, doesn't it?? They can say 0 carbs if they are less than 1 I think...and it sucks. You've just learned the lesson the hard way to read labels first. I don't think they'll do THAT much damage though. I'd still call it clean if it were me.

Yeah, I just cant stomach the idea that I cant call it clean because of a "misunderstanding". I've been working so hard! I don't want to post my progress until the end of the 2 weeks, but I have already lost some lbs. and my ketone sticks have remained purple. I have learned my lesson though...I will read all ingredients first!

BTW...ValidRouge, is that a new picture? I have to check your past posts, but I think thats a new picture of you...as matter of fact, I think you had on a blue silk like shirt before. The stance is similar. YOU LOOK GREAT!

There are a few acceptable foods that have sugar in them. Mayo for instance. Don't worry about it, its such a small amount, it doesn't seem to affect our weighloss or blood sugar.
Good lesson though, always read the ingredients.

Im in the 2nd week of induction and during the first week I ate a total of 2 bags of pork rinds and im 15 lbs down just after a week, it all depends on your body i guess.

It is a trace amount of sugar. In the case of bacon, they use it in the curing process.

My rule of thumb, if the label says 0 carbs, but the ingredients list any kind of sugar, I call it 1 carb.

And call your Induction clean. You're doing great. Your Keto-Stiks are turning colors, which means that you're burning fat. Be proud!

Thanks for the response...I am still truckin' along. Checked my stixs after those two days of possible sugar exposure and things were still fine. The purple seemed slighly lighter than the day before but it was still in the "moderate" range. Will be careful to read ingredients from now on though! Thanks again everyone for the support.
