  • Induction Weight Gain

    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and was hoping someone could lend some advice.

About two years ago, I did "low carb" but not necessarily Atkins. Then, after 13 years, I had another baby and gained 70 pounds while pregnant (darn that ice cream and macaroni and cheese )

I'm on day 4 of induction, and when I weighed myself this morning, I had gained two pounds...I'm so frustrated and sad. I need to lose 40 pounds and was really hoping I could do it.

    FYI -- I am 5'4 and weigh 165 pounds

I'm going to post my menu and see if anyone can lend some suggestions:

Day 1 (I started after breakfast and another breakdown at the scale)

Slimfast High Protein Bar – 18 net carbs

Turkey w/two slices cheddar cheese, a little lettuce and mayo

Chicken breast and two cups salad

    30 minutes of cardio

    Day 2

Breakfast – 3 slices turkey, ½ slice cheddar cheese and a little mayo

Lunch – 2 boca burgers (1 net carb each), ½ slice cheddar cheese, 1 lettuce leaf, a little mayo and mustard

Dinner – 6 chicken wings (made them myself, no carbs)

    10 celery sticks

    8 slices of cucumber

    One gallon of water

2 cups coffee (no cream, no sugar)

40 minutes of cardio exercise, 20 minutes of playing in the pool w/the kids J

    Day 3

Breakfast - 3 slices turkey, ½ slice cheddar cheese and a little mayo

Lunch – chicken salad (verified ingredients, made with mayo)

Dinner – 6 oz grilled salmon, two cups lettuce, 7 cucumber slices, Caesar dressing

    One gallon of water

2 cups coffee (no cream or sugar)

    20 minutes of pilates

    Day 4

Breakfast -- 3 slices turkey, ½ slice cheddar cheese and a little mayo

Lunch – tuna salad (verified ingredients, made with mayo)

Dinner (we’re going out and I already know what I’m having at my favorite restaurant):

1 doz steamed clams, side salad (no dressing)

And, already today I’ve had 72 oz of water

    1 cup coffee

Any thoughts as to why I'm gaining weight?? Oh, and I did measure myself and did not see any decrease in measurements...

    Help, I'm desperate!!

      Re: Induction Weight Gain

Slimfast protein bars, lunch meat with high salt, not drinking enough water, retaining salt, and PMS....oh, and probably a few others that I'm over looking.

While you're going through Induction you body goes through a lot of adjustments. Having a clean Induction without the bars and anything that is not listed in the book as Induction Friendly, while drinking your water and enjoying the exercise will make some great changes over the next 2 weeks. Hang in there! You're doing a great job, just keep the focus that it's not over yet and you're body is adjusting.

The only thing that stuck out at me is the Slim Fast Protein bar (18 carbs?). You might want to drop that which you may have already done since it wasn't listed in your next couple of days menu. Good luck hope the scale smiles on you soon!

          Re: Induction Weight Gain

Day one was a little heavy, but the carb counts are better days 2-4. You should try to get in some more nutrient-dense veggies; lettuce is pretty much a waste of your carb allowance. You need the carb total under 20 everyday, so be sure to count the ones in cheese, clams, dressings & seasonings.
Other than that, there's no reason to think you have gained any fat. Water affects the scales as much as fat and muscle, and lots of things can alter your water retention. Take your measurements, and forget the scales for 2 weeks. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

            Re: Induction Weight Gain

if the exercise program is new to you your muscles will be reacting to that new to them load with a surge of protectionism and storing fuel and fluids like carzy to "save" you from that threat that is making you load them that much.

There is a reason Dr Atkins says 14 days of no weighing. check your inches now and measure afgain at the 14 day mark and watch the fat melting off as you work your Atkins.

              Re: Induction Weight Gain

Thank you for all of your help! Yes, my slimfast bar was on the day I decided I just had to start Atkins. I was trying slimfast, but was not losing...and, after crying when I weighed myself...I decided it was the last time and started induction at lunch.

I just got anxious and stepped on the scale. I know I shouldn't have...but, have you ever been just sooo desperate to see a change you have too? I'm sure this will work...it will!

Thank you, all...the encouragement is wonderful!

                Re: Induction Weight Gain

The only alteration to your menu I would suggest would be to spread your veggies out across the day.

This helps to even out any blood sugar spikes from the carbs you are eating.

Also to do the same thing make sure you dont ever eat just veggies - like cucumber slices or celery sticks - on their own. Have a fullfat dressing/dip with them or smear a little cream cheese on them.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
