  • New to Atkins, just some questions

For the last 4 days I have been doing the induction to the best of my ability.

I am really confused by total carbs and net carbs. Can someone explain this to me.

Would anyone happen to have some ideas of what I can have during the induction period?

I have been drinking atleast 9 16oz bottles of water a day for the last 4 days which is good for me considering I WAS an avid Iced Tea drinker. Did have the induction headache 2 days ago and a little one has been lingering since, but not annoying.

Any tips. I started 4 days ago at 230 now 225 so i know I must be doing something right but don't want to mess this up.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi and welcome.

If you haven't read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition already, then I highly suggest you do so now. Way too many people do "Atkins" on the guidelines provided by some shoddy magazine article or by their best friend's boyfriend's sister's co-worker's daughter-in-law's third cousin's hairdresser's mother's friend's neighbor---that's the not best way to do Atkins because there's alot more to it than keeping your carbohydrates at a certain level.

As for total carbs and net carbs, total carb is the total amount of carbohydrate a food contains. "Net carbs" is something Dr. Atkins made up because fiber is also considered a carbohydrate. However, fiber is not digested so the carbs it contributes to the food does not affect your blood sugar. Therefore, Dr. Atkins said you can subtract fiber from the total carb amount, hence "net" carb.

There should be a sticky thread at the top of this forum that explains it in alittle more detail.

Thanks for helping with the info Megs,
I did read the DANDR book several times. I know that fiber is deducted. But if something says 23g carbs on back label but on front it says 2g carbs, is the other sugars and fiber deducted together? I know each sugar is counted in with carbs. I just want to do this correctely.

I will look for the thread.
      thanks again

Hi La La, What are you eating that has 23 carbs on the label. I suspect that its something that isn't on the acceptable list!!!. What they do is not count the sugar alcohols but we try to avoid sugar alcohols cause they stall some folks, the give others diarrhea and they are just not natural.

LOL, I was using that as an example. For instance I was checking out the low carb bars, and on the label its high but on the front most say 2 grams. Just to get an idea what is out there. I have been drinking so much water, salads, (just lettuce and cucumber) my meats and proteins, (separate from my family's meals) and bacon, cheeses, eggs, pork rinds ect.

Just want to figure out the right way of net carbs.

Pork rinds and low-carb bars sadly cause many to stall. Stick with this finite list of allowable foods, and you should be set for success! http://www.atkins.com/articles/atkin...ceptable-foods

Remember to look at the ingredients of any processed food as well as the carb counts!

If anything contains milk, nuts, seeds, fruit, soya, starches or wheat products then it is not allowed on induction although it might well be 'legal' for the OWL phase of Atkins once you reach the relevant level/rung.

It would be much safer to stick to unprocessed foods, where you know nothing 'extra' has been added!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Thankyou to those who have replied to me. I am going to sit down today and make a list of all the foods I can have and post on my fridge.

Re: New to Atkins, just some questions

Okay in your example of the 23 total carbs but the label says 2 grams....

Carbs are fiber, sugar, starches, sugar alcohols, and those "special" non-digestible carbohydrates like some vegetable gums (used as a food stabilizer), glycerin and polydextrose. If you read cereal boxes, in particular, or some processed foods, you might come across a label that has 10 total carbs, 2 fiber grams and 3 sugar grams. The 5 unaccounted for carb grams is most likely some kind of stabilizer or starch.

According to the book, the only thing we can subtract for the net carb amount is fiber and the sugar alcohols. However, the Atkins products and many others, subtract the things like glycerin and polydextrose too.

LaLa, there is a list already for you to print out somewhere here on the board. Great question by the way, glad your not eating those bars. For the most part they taste like cardboard and are expensive.
