imit. vanilla extract contains caramel colour

Hi all,

Is this okay? The jar of imitation vanilla extract i have contains caramel colour, i just tried making a 'mock danish', it's sitting in the freezer now, wanted to chill it a little.

Sooo.. i can eat it right?

Please help!

oh dear, i took like 3 bites and then tossed it, i think the caramel colour is probably like a sugar, i'm too scared to even google it now, hope i didn't stuff up, this sweet tooth of mine! ughhh

Most imitation vanilla extracts contain alcohol, which is where the small amount of carbohydrates per Tbsp. come from (.3); however, that being said, the caramel coloring is not a from of sugar unless listed as such. It should be treated as a spice and limited as such. Just be sure to verify that your particular brand does not contain sugar and you should be fine.

As far as a sweet tooth is concerned... try eating something sour. The portion of the brain that is stimulated by the consumption of sweets can not differentiate sweet from sour. Often times a nice sour pickle or a few tart green olives will quench said sweet tooth.

caramel coloring can also be wheat based which may cause some problems...my daughter is allergic to wheat and I can't give her anything with caramel coloring! Sometimes the color comes from cooking sugar and sometimes it comes from a wheat base. You can call and ask hte company if you really want the details.
