    1 CUP of LETTUCE looks like what?

    Okay Im a guy, and a little clueless. And I might have asked this before.

    But what does 1 cup of shredded lettuce look like on standard small plate?? Know what I mean. And how many slices of cumcumber equate to a 1/2 cup? Huh? I mean do I need to shove as much lettuce into a cup measure or what.

    Are there any practical guides/pictures whatever that explain better what a cup of this or that is???

    you could use a set of measuring cups, mark. your hand is going to be bigger than mine but i sorta measure by handful.

    slice the cucumber ahead of time and bag them. then when your ready to make your salad, take out your 1/2 measure and grab a scoop.

    the picture thing is a good idea. maybe we can get one of our saavy food members to work on a thread.

      Do yourself a favor and invest $ 10.00 on liquid and dry measuring cup and a set of measuring spoons.

      There are some "rule of thumbs" like an ounce is a "small handful" but that's way too subjective, because my 'small' handful might be larger than your 'small handful'

      Once you get used to seeing the real amount, it becomes easier to estimate it.

        Meg youre eveywhere. I have measuring cups, but again do I shove lettuce in a 1 cup thing until full, or just grab a reasonable small wad with my hand??? I know this sounds silly but you have to think like a man....we are visually based people!

          Mark, dont PACK in your cup measurement. Its not brown sugar, it doesnt get packed in.

          If it is easier for you, invest in a kitchen scale and weigh foods instead of measuring with measuring cups. There are a number of websites that list the scale weights for measurments. ie- 1c=47grams so allyou do is add to the scale until you hit 47. I find measuring cups too subjective for the reason you mentioned.... pack it in! and instead weigh everything.

            Megs no one has ever answered the question like you did, and I agree. Thanks.

            I agree becasue I just found this pocket card doing a food measures search. Its made by the MIH NAtional Institutes for Health, and it shows a cup of lettuce being the size of a baseball. LOts of other examples too. Visual. I get that.
