Re: A birthday with no cake?!

Yummm! I'm making this tomorrow! I didn't know that Whey Protein was induction legal. Does that mean we can use it for other things? Does it fall in the Protein category or extras or ....?

    THANKS!

Actually, someone's probably hurling rotten maters at me right now. Whey is a bit controversial whether you should use it the 1st 2 weeks. Technically it is a dairy product so you can't have it, but then so is cheese and cream, which you can have in limited amounts. Likewise, there's a heap of sweetener in the recipe - that's limited to 2 servings/day.

I'd say 1. check carefully the label on your whey (some brands have more milk sugars than others) and figure the carbs into your totals. And DON'T EAT THE WHOLE CAKE!

(I'd put it in the protein category, personally. Its the milk sugars cause problems, and sweeteners for some people).

P.S. - you can sweeten & flavor cream cheese for icing...

Re: A birthday with no cake?!

2Big has a post here somewhere that I'll try to find. She said if the protein powder is isolate it can be used on induction.

I do know she said that if your protein powder is whey protein isolate - you can use it for induction, if it's whey protein - wait for OWL, and if it's only marked whey powder - throw it in the trash. LOL

If I can find that post I'll toss it out here.

          Re: whey...

Milk is composed of water, fat, sugar (lactose) and proteins (whey and casein). Casein is the protein that clumps in milk. Whey stays in the liquid.

Using whey protein isolate and soy protein isolate, I agree with Boonie, it is controversial especially in the first 14 days of Induction. The real concern is how your body is affected by those particular proteins. For example, when I re-introduced whole wheat into my OWL phase diet, I found that my body does not react well to gluten, the wheat protein. Granted, prior to Atkins, I was a good little low fat follower and made sure I ate my 11 servings of grains daily. I was also bloated and had severe problems with my asthma and allergies. I didn't realize until this diet that wheat protein is bad for my body. Whenever I eat wheat protein containing products, I bloat, retain water (which leads to me "gaining" or "not losing" pounds), and my asthma acts up.

Since Induction is a minimum of 14 days and because the first 14 days are so very important to plan your Atkins, I don't recommend you introduce the refined protein isolates until Day 15. That way, if you've been doing well for the first 14 days and on Day 15 you introduce a protein powder and your weight loss stops or slows, you can more or less conclude the powder derailed you. If you introduce it in the beginning and your weight loss derails, you won't know what went "wrong" for you and you'll need to review your menues and eliminate potential problem-foods.

As for cheating.... it depends on the person how well they can return to their diet after a cheat. I've been around these boards long enough to see people do a planned cheat and return to Atkins 75 pounds and 1 year later. So, I don't recommend it. But again, you need to know yourself. If you are the type of person, who cannot control their eating, then you might need to think twice about planning a cheat. If you are the type of person who "needs" to have cookies, cakes, pies, chips, etc., then you might want to re-assess your "need", especially if meeting those "needs" are the primary reason for your current weight.

Every time I've ever planned to cheat, it throws me into a tailspin. It might only last a few days or it might last months. And it's never been worth it.
