  • day 3 going so far so good......

the last 2 days i have made my own supper because the people i live withm, due to having some medical bills i need to get caught up with before moving out again, said that they dont want to try it. i made a pizza(on the induction menu forum in a link i found)it was made with cream cheese and cheese as the crust, and i put pizza sauce, ham(checked to make sure ok), ground beef and mozzarella cheese on it & mushrooms...it was delicious luckily i made enough for an extra small piece. my nephew was saying why do you get that bigger piece and we have to share this small one....i tried to explain to him that it is because his aunt cant have the stuff grandma & his mom made. they all loved the pizza so next time i will make more. yesterday i made taco salad(of course without the crust) it was just ground beef, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, cheese it was delicious luckily i made enough for everyone this time even though they all had high carb soups while all i ate was the taco salad. they rushed at it like it was going to disapear or something...

i have come to the realization that i need to stop feeling guily when i put aside stuff like cheese sticks for my snacks and the kids come over and want some(they can go through 3 bags in about half an hour if you dont watch them.....my nephew asked me if he could have one and i had to tell him no because i dont have the money to go get more and i need that amount. it just feels to me like i am being mean when i say no....what do ya'll think?

I don't think its mean at all. Sometimes we just have to do things for ourselves. I would just tell your nephew that you are working on your health and will need those to get through the week. Or in the alternative, if you have enough and want to give one, then limit at that - one. Kids can overdo it sometimes too.

Hang in there!! I know its tough.

If they're going through 3 bags of cheese sticks per visit, putting limits on how much they eat might be saving them from a lifetime of obesity. Children need to learn proper portion sizes and good eating habits. Letting them eat as much as they want of one food or the other isn't teaching them about eating properly is it?

They should not be eating "adult-sized portions". So 1 cheese stick should be considered maybe 2 child-sized servings.
      http://www.epicurious.com/cooking/he...cles/portions1
Kids are growing and should eat, eat, eat, right? Not so, according to registered dietitian Marilyn Tanner, a pediatric dietitian at St. Louis Children's Hospital: "Children are constantly bombarded with adult-sized portions." What is a proper kid-size portion? As a rough rule of thumb, says Tanner, 1 tablespoon of food unit per year of age. So feed a 1-year-old about 1 tablespoon of food, a 2-year-old, 2 tablespoons, and so on. Once they go to school at age 5 or 6, they can use their own tightly clenched fist as a portion guideline. Emphasizes Tanner: "Parents play an important role in whether their kids eat healthfully. They're very impressionable, and unconsciously mimic their parents' food preferences and meal habits — including portion sizes."

thank you both....i have often worried about that, probably need to find a better hiding place for the cheese....when my other neice & nephews (who dont live with us) come over its kind of like we give them anything they ask for because we havent seen them in a while and dont want to have to say no. though i have had to use what i call my "Non Aunt" voice several times (if putting them in time out or telling them they can't do something they deem fun but i deem non safe(after all i am the adult not them

so i will try that way...my problem is whenever i say no to my nephew who lives with us his mother is super overprotective of him and i see her out of the corner of my eye giving me this look like "How dare you!" and since her and my brother have only been married less than a year mom is always on her side and tries to make me do whatever my nephew(who is almost wants to do. usually i say fine cause i dont feel like a fight. but as i told my parents when they tried to get me to have what they cooked instead of a seperate meal...this is my health and that is too important to me. i have to start saying no to them and yes to me for once in my life.

sorry that kind of turned into a rant....guess you figured out i have some issues with family members....

Sounds like your off to a great start. And I wouldn't feel too bad about not sharing with the nieces and nephews, just tell them you need this food to get healthy and can't afford to run out of what you need. I have 4 children still living at home, and while I try to share what I can, at times when the groceries start getting low, I have to tell them to stay out of my stuff until I can get back to the grocery store. Do I feel bad? Yeah a little, but they seem to understand, and there are other foods in the house to eat that is still healthy, like fruit, and peanut butter and other stuff they like and can eat.

              You are doing so good.

What I would say about your mom and your sister-in-law is this: if they want the kids to have the food, the same food they pressure you about eating, then they should be considerate of you, your way of eating and your financial circumstances and buy a seperate stash for the children.

thank you all so much i feel alot better now.

its hard when i am staying at my mom's cause she is really good at the guilt trip thing. but i keep telling them that the reason they went and did the lap band procedure to lose weight is the same reason i am sticking to atkins for good. dad understands but i think mom is on the fence, she will say stuff like well why dont you just go down and get the surgery done and then you wont have to worry about it. I have had several surgeries done in my life(4 open heart surgeries when i was 2(cardiologist fixed the problem, though i go see him every 4 years still) and 1 gall bladder surgery they had to do the old way since i had an unusual muscle and they weren't able to do the laser way.)) since i had all those surgeries if i can get around having another one done the better..... Plus low carb is the only way to stop the cravings for me, from what i noticed. i am super carb addicted. 1 cookie can easily turn into 20-25 snuck to my room so noone sees. i do that alot, but the last 3 days i havent. so thats good.

Good for you for choosing to attempt it on your own - without weight loss surgery. I'm certainly not knocking WLS, but I would much rather try to make the change myself before going through something like that.

                  Hang in there!!!

I've been in your position before, with both the financial and the family problems.

I know it's hard to think of yourself first and that sometimes it feels "selfish". Maybe you can try to think of it as you're giving your neices and nephews an energetic, fit aunt in the long run instead of giving them your food now?

Hope this helps, I still feel a bit guilty about concentrating so much on myself instead of my family.
