  • Help Me Feel The Burn.

OKAY SO I'M DRINKING MY WATER AND I'M WATCHING MY CARB INTAKE, BUT I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO WORK UP ENOUGH ENERGY TO MOTIVATE MYSELF TO DO ANY TYPE OF EXERCISE AT ALL. I WORK ALL DAY IN A BAKERY CAFE WHERE I STAND FOR 8 HOURS ON MY BAD FEET. ONE OF MY FEET, THE LEFT ONE IS VERY SORE AT THE END OF THE DAY. WHEN I SIT DOWN FOR A MINIMUM OF TEN MINUTES OR SO, I HAVE AN EXCRUTIATING PAIN AT THE BOTTOM OF MY FOOT WHERE MY HEEL STARTS. I HAVE BEEN ATTRIBUTING THIS TO HOW HEAVY I AM, AS WELL AS MY SHOES THAT ARE BECOMING NO SUPPORT AT ALL. BUT MY POINT IS THAT WHEN I GET HOME FROM WORK, I AM DEFINITELY NOT IN AN EXERCISING MODE. CAN SOMEONE SUGGEST SOME EASY STARTING EXERCISES I CAN DO UNTIL I CAN WALK, JOG AND RUN PROPERLY?

If you look on the internet, you can find some great chair exercises that use weights and will help you stay off your feet. If you feel like going to a gym, aqua aerobics may be a good choice. Or, even a little mini-trampoline may be a good idea for starters. Hope these ideas helped!

I have spent most of Atkins doing upper body exercises including portable bike pedals ( the bike pedals and mechanism without the bike), Tae Bo, swimming and 2, 3, 4 and 5 # weights. If you have a pool nearby or can join a community pool, do it! It is so wonderful to be able to jog in place for an hour in a pool or just do stretches or work with "noodles" (their induction safe!). No, we all can't run and walk, but the key is to move the best we can in a safe fashion.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

water aerobics. My mom swears by them and has sore feet and knees. You don't realize how hard you are working out and they all relax in the hot tub when it's done. Do you have any local pools?

          My real question is...................
How do you ever stay motivated and true to Atkins while working in a bakery!? I can't even go in the bakery section of a grocery store while I am struggling through induction. WOW, impressive!
vJosie is right....water aerobics seems to be a more sensitive approach to burning calories for those with sore joints. I don't know if that is available to you though. Good luck!

So true. That's some serious willpower.

Regarding the exercise, start small. It could be something really simple, like just walking to the end of the driveway. Every day make an effort to take it a little bit farther, maybe you could try the end of your road, or the end of town

Exercise will definitely strengthen you for work - improve your stamina etc.

Re: Help Me Feel The Burn.

I sympathize with the foot pain - I had plantar faciitis in both feet until recently, and I'm sure it's due to all the weight taken off. I am stuck sitting most of my waking hours, and have found that a resistance band (like a 6' long rubber cord with loops at either end) can be put to use exercising on-the-job in many ways. Loops can be used on hands or feet, band can be doubled for extra tension. You can stand on it in the middle and do pull-ups; or doble it and stretch it to work pecs, for instance. You might also think about a couple of blocks of wood at work you can do stair-stepping on. Leg-lifting, hold the knee up 5-10 sec is a good one, and all these you can do at work.
Body parts can be intermittently tensed, held and released for repetitive exercise, and maintaining good posture will never get you in trouble, even if there's customers watching.

I never thought about taking a band to work, that's a great idea. I have some small weights, probably 3#, that I keep in the office. It's great for getting a little exercise in and tension relief both.

Re: Help Me Feel The Burn.

Honestly- best motivation is get up and do it in the morning. Go for a stroll before your feet get sore-jump on a trampette ( great fun) doing it before work is great for getting it out of the way, and then you cant come up with excuses through out the day.

I inititially growled in the morning when the alarm went off at the crack of dawn practically, but when im out early , its quiet, the sun is rising. Its a beautiful way to excercise. Now i run 5 times a week and i love the time alone to think. I love it!

                    Good luck
