  • Day 6 of induction, and a question...

    Hi Everyone,

I am new to this board and have posted in a few other places but not here yet. I am on day 6 of induction, and today is my birthday and I'm not cheating! I'm down 10 pounds so far but have a long way to go. I am currently 282 (started at 292) and my goal weight is 150. My question is, how long should I stay on induction? I did see that people extend induction, but I know I have a long way to go, I'm not sure if it's healthy to stay on induction for that long. I want to do the OWL and Maintenance phases this time, because last time I did Atkins, about 4 years ago, I lost 40 lbs but then went straight back to eating carbs again. So, my question is what weight should I be at when I start OWL?

    Wish me luck!
    Melissa

Induction lasts a minimum of 14 days. On Day 15, you can move onto OWL phase, continue to lose weight and eat a wider variety of foods.

Too many people make the mistake of thinking that the lower you keep your carbs the "faster" you will lose weight---nope. In the last sentence in Chapter 13 of DANDR, Dr. Atkins explains that the only people who can benefit from a prolonged Induction are people with severe metabolic imbalances because Induction can correct or alleviate those imbalances.

Too many people make the mistake of losing all their weight on Induction then move onto Maintenance, skipping the other two weight loss phases. Unfortunately it's during those weight loss phases you learn how to keep that weight off.

In the end it's up to you to decide how you want your weight loss and your weight maintenance to proceed. The only other caveat is that the last 5-10 pounds must be spent in Pre-Maintenance Phase----if you want to maintain your goal weight.

My vote is to move into OWL on Day 15. It's only more vegetables, it's really hard to go wrong.

I've lost about 60 of my 70 lbs on OWL!!! The variety keeps me totally satisfied, and I can attribute that to my success this time around.

If you are prone to getting bored with more limited food choices and this causes you to cheat or fall off the wagon, then start into Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) right after induction, is my opinion.

My sister just started atkins and that's what I told her. She was already getting bored, and as soon as she hit the 15th day she moved on and started adding in things she wanted to eat.

Date Started Atkins: 7/16/05 - Present day
        Currently in Maintenance

        SW: 185 lbs
        GW: 130 lbs
        CW: 129 lbs

read chapter 13 of your DANDR and answer the questions. that quiz will tell you when it is time to move on. yes weight loss will slow but this isn't a race to goal. it is a life long journey to a smaller healthier you.

remember too you can climb the rungs in OWL as slowly as you want
