  • Questions about foods!

    Hi,

I am now on Day 7 of Atkins and doing pretty well. Today was actually the hardest for me. I had a few cravings while I was out shopping, at restaurants, etc. all day today, but didn't cheat at all. Any ideas why? Any tips on how not to get cravings to begin with?

Anyway, I had a few questions about foods that I can't find on the Atkins site or in my book. On induction, can you use pretty much any spices? I'd like to use onion powder, garlic powder and seasoned salt and pepper on my steaks? Is that okay?

Also, is cocktail sauce okay? If not, has anyone heard of any kind of low-carb cocktail sauce? I really would like to start eating more shrimp.

hi, I'm on day 7 too. One thing I read is that you should eat before you go out, so you don't get cravings....maybe that would help? I think the spices you are mentioning are ok. As far as the cocktail sauce, I don't know of a low-carb kind. Good luck, sould like you are doing really good!

I personally check ALL labels - some seasonings have sugar in them so be careful.

Cocktail sauce is basically catsup and horseradish, make your own - I always do it...

First make your own sugarfree catsup
1 tiny can of tomato paste
      dash of white vineger
part of a packet of splenda
optional - Pinch of Garlic, onion or chili powder
      Blend and Refrigerate

Add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of bottled horseradish (not the sauce) to a tablespoon of your homemade catsup (depends on taste)

You still have to watch out for carbs though, this is probably about 3 carbs for a tablespoon. I am staying away from it personally untill after induction.

herbs and spices do have cauntable carbs but we are allowed tro use them per chapter 11 of DANDR for induction.

as to the cravings figure out what caused it so you can take steps to avoid it in the future always have your atkins emergency kit packed and with you so you can defeat them. eating before you go is also an option.

I've found that the best way to avert "cravings" is to reach for your bottle of water. For me, it served as a reminder that I could be as easily eating Twinkies than following my plan. It will subside in time.

I love seafood and I've actually made a mayo and horseradish sauce with a couple of shakes of tabasco and some lemon.

Oooh I feel for you with those stinky cravings right now. As 2Big said, it could be something you ate that is triggering it, so look into that...

For me the first few weeks of the new WOE were hard. There were day's I thought I'd die if I didn't eat what ever it was that I was craving. I stayed strong and made due with a little more meat and cheese, sugar free jello or fresca (I know these are frowned upon, but they truely saved me!)... About my 4th week in I realized that I hadn't had a craving for awhile and was so happy because I new I had made it. I honestly haven't had a craving for anything high carb for months now. Literally all cravings are gone. Every now and then I might feel left out when everyone is eating pie or something but I just make my Atkins friendly version and it's no big deal.

Stay strong - Eventually these cravings will pass and it WILL get easier!!! I promise!
