  • Question about bars

    Hi All,

I have a question regarding some high protein cereal bars. My son was on summer vacation from college and worked for a company that boxed South Beach Diet bars and they got to bring home a ton of them so he gave them to me.

I'm on induction so I haven't tried them (and won't) but I wondered what they count for as far as carbs as I'm a bit confused about net carbs.

    The wrapper says:

    Total Fat 5g
    Saturated Fat 2g
    Trans Fat 0g
    Polyunsaturated Fat 1.5g
    Monounsaturated Fat 1.5g
    Cholesterol omg
    Sodium 160mg
    Potassium 140mg
    Total Carbohydrate 15g
    dietary Fiber 3g
    Sugars 6g
    Sugar Alcohol 3g
    Protein 10g

I'm only asking because I have quite a few boxes of them and hate to throw them out if they can be used but I really am confused about how to figure out net carbs.

    Thank you!

    Re: Question about bars

Net carbs are total carbs minus dietary fiber. So according to this information, a bar has 12 Net carbs ... Definitely too much for my taste. Strikes me that what else would be important is the list of ingredients to see if any of the listed items is on the list of foods to avoid. South Beach is different than Atkins in some of the foods and when and if they can be introduced.

Thanks so much - way too many carbs indeed! Even when I'm done induction, I don't want to be wasting that many carbs especially when Atkins has some great bars with a lot less carbs.

I also know that the bars can slow down weight loss and I definitely don't want to do that. Monday was my one week mark and I've lost 6 1/2 lbs!

        Re: Question about bars

donate those bars to your food pantry and don't buy any even atkins as they to use the mythical magical counting noncounting sugar alcohols subtraction to get those lower numbers. The FDA which defines fiber as anything that enters your mouth and passes out the other end unmetabolized said NO! when low carb bar makers Atkins included petioned in 2001 to allow the hydrogenated starches, glycerine and Sugar alcohols to be included as fiber.
