  • mayonnaise question?

Is it allowed? I've read somewhere that it's allowed, and was going to have a deviled egg today but then I checked my Atkins shopping guide and it had an exclamation next to it. So I looked on the acceptable food list and I don't see it there. I decided to have plain hard boiled eggs just to be safe. edited to add, or is there a certain brand that's ok?

Full fat mayo is good. IMHO Hellmans full fat is the best, but there are others.

as long as it's regular mayonaise and not fat free or any other mayo brand that has been altered to be healthier for you. if you had a low fat mayo vs a regular mayo you would see more carbs in the low fat version, since you are on atkins the regular mayo is what you want to get, just make sure you read the label.

Thank you. I've got Kraft Real Mayonnaise. It says no carbs but I noticed sugar halfway through the ingredients and got wary. I'm working on kicking my sweet tooth and don't want to bring on cravings. Maybe I'm being to cautious.

          Re: mayonnaise question?

mayo is good what you want to do is read the labels on anything you wanbt to know about and if the ingredients are legal then the food is legal like mayo. DUKE's mayo is the only sugar free one out there but most oflk treat mayo like the salad dressing exception to sugar in the ingredients list.

You can also make your own, it's really easy....
            INGREDIENTS:
            • 1 egg or egg substitute to equal 1 egg
            • 1 scant teaspoon prepared mustard
            • cayenne pepper, optional
            • 1/4 teaspoon salt
            • 1 cup Canola oil
            • 3 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

            PREPARATION:

Put the egg or egg substitute, mustard, cayenne pepper (if using), and salt in a blender; blend at high speed for about 20 seconds. Gradually add the oil through the top of the blender, while blending, in droplets at first, blending until all the oil has been blended with the egg and mayonnaise is thick and creamy.

Blend in lemon juice just until mixed

If you are a germ-a-phobe, use egg substitute or pasturized eggs instead of the raw egg.

Hellman's rocks. Even the foodies eat it. As a side note, if you're making your own, just be sure to use it quickly - since it doesn't have the preservatives, I forget what the shelf life is, but I remember my mom making batches when I was younger then getting upset 'cause we didn't eat it fast enough...

If you make your own and use pasteurized eggs (or egg substitue) it lasts about 5 days.
Raw egg, use it in a day or 2. (small batches!)

also you can flavor your mayo.
                        I like:
                        garlic and cumin mayo
                        avacodo mayo
                        chipotle in adobo mayo (spicy!)
and of course all of these are also great if you mix them half mayo-half sour cream and flavor them.....

Um... okay, I admit it, I like spam too. Of course I don't eat it now, for many reasons, and besides, I just got rid of the swelling from all the salt I'd been eating!

Right now I'm eating egg salad with olives and Hellman's mayo for lunch. Followed by cucumber slices that I'll dip in ranch dressing and a tankard of water LOL

Mayo feels like such an indulgence.........
