  • Not enough water today - What should I do?

I was running errands most of the day with my daughter and I've hardly drank any water (or anything else) today which is very unusual for me.

Should I try to squeeze it all in before I go to bed and risk being up all night running to the bathroom or just wait until tomorrow and get back into my regualr routine?

I know I'm still in ketosis as my breath could singe the hair off a dog (worst side effect). We were joking that Atkins causes Halacious breath. Will not drinking all my water cause problems with my ketosis or with loosing weight?

This is my first day that I've not been able to get all my water in so I'm a bit worried - I don't want to stall as I'll just get depressed and want to throw in the towel. I'm down 15 lbs and need to keep going strong!

Whatever you do, don't "chug" a large amount (like 16 oz or more) in order to 'make up for it. Drinking large amounts of water at one time can bring on potentially fatal side effects.

Use this as a learning experience and develop strategies to ensure you will drink water in the future, ex. bringing along a bottle of water, etc.

Not2late - about chugging the water, what kind of side effects? Is it just chugging water that can cause harmful effect or is it also drinking a large amount of water in a short amount of time? And if so, any idea how much is too much in a short period of time? Also, why is it harmful?

lol sorry to hijack the thread but I'm paranoid. lol...

There's a condition called water intoxication. Basically, you drink too much water over a period of time (short or long), you dilute your electrolytes and things like seizures and death can occur. It's seen in infants, atheletes and silly college frat boys.

I don't think anyone here will chug a gallon or two of water at one time. However, there are a few things to consider:
        1. Ketosis/lipolysis is a strong diuretic. That's why we must not only drink water to compensate for the water we are losing, but we must also replenish our electrolytes through our diets by eating a variety of foods, like vegetables.
        2. Some of us are effected greatly by this diuresis and we manifest signs of electrolyte imbalance: muscle cramps/muscle fatigue.
        3. If your electrolytes are already on the low side due to ketosis or pre-existing medical conditions, it's possible at a large amount of water at one time may dilute your electrolytes to the point of water intoxication.

I'm sure there are folks here would will say they've chugged a gallon and nothing happened to them. Well, that's great for them. Just be cautious with your own body.

Re: Not enough water today - What should I do?

Thank you for the info. We had a college frat initiation go awry here about a year or so ago where a young man was forced to chug a ungodly amount of water in a short time. Because his body couldn't absorb/flush the water through his system fast enough it caused his brain to swell and he died. Terrible tragedy.

I am definitely going to be more concious when I'm out running errands. I didn't expect to be gone so long but you know how it is with the bank, grocery store and WalMart (tutu buying for dance class).

Wow, I didn't realize too much water could kill you! Really, it's kind of scary...
But I guess I'll live as long as I don't try it, eh?
The chugging a gallon of water reminds me those stories where people dare other people to chug a gallon of milk... a friend of mine swears she's done it but I've yet to see it!

adreliluc - I was looking at your pic and can't believe how much you've changed. I started out a bit heavier than you and I can't wait to get where you are and see the change in my face.

I got on the demon scales today and I've lost 16lbs but I swear that I dont even see a difference, not even in my clothes but I feel different. I just can't wait to say my pants are too big.

My husband has been dieting (not doing Atkins though) and he's lost 15 lbs and his pants are falling off - wish I had that problem. How long did it take you to see a very noticable change in your body?
